Letter m

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "m" through a picture of a monkey sitting on a mango tree. Learners look at the picture, say the words that begin with "m", enjoy hands-on activities, and trace the letter "m". Everything is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn simple words that begin with the letter "m": monkey, mango, moon, motorcycle, mug
  • Trace the letter "m"

Key Vocabulary (from textbook pages 38-39)

  • Hero words: monkey, mango

Teacher Background

  • The letter "m" makes the /m/ sound, as at the start of monkey and mango. Show learners that the lips press together, like saying "mmm" for something yummy.
  • The activity boxes also use milk, mountains and mat, which all start with "m".
  • Keep sessions short (25-30 minutes) with lots of movement, repetition and praise.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 38, a large letter "m" card, picture flashcards (monkey, mango, moon, motorcycle, mug), a real mango (optional)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a hello song
  • Hold up a large letter "m" card: "This is the letter m. Say it with me: m!"
  • Make the sound together and rub tummies: "/m/, /m/, mmm, yummy!"

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Open page 38. Ask: "What animal can you see? Where is it sitting?"
  • Point to the monkey: "This is a monkey. Monkey! /m/, /m/, monkey!" Learners repeat and scratch like monkeys
  • Point to the mangoes: "These are mangoes. They grow on a mango tree. Mango!" Learners repeat. Show a real mango if you have one
  • Say the speech bubble slowly, pointing to the monkey and the tree: "Monkey is sitting on the mango tree."
  • Learners echo in chunks: "Monkey is sitting" / "on the mango tree."
  • Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat in a big voice, a small voice and a whisper:
    • moon
    • motorcycle
    • mug
  • Play "Point and Say": call a word, learners point to the right picture

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up flashcards one by one; learners say the word
  • Ask: "Which letter do these words start with?" (m)

Differentiation

  • Support: Let learners do an action (monkey scratch, brmm for motorcycle, sip from a mug) while the teacher says the word
  • Extension: Ask: "What colour are the mangoes? How many mangoes can you count on one branch?"

Day 2: Little Activity Boxes (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Milk and small cups, a short video clip of high mountains, playdough

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the letter "m" card and say "mmm" together
  • Quick flashcard game with monkey, mango, moon, motorcycle, mug

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Choose three or four of the textbook activity boxes for today:

  • Little Explorers (5 minutes): Pour a little milk for every learner and drink it together. Tell them milk makes their bones strong. Say "milk" together. Check for allergies first.
  • Little Innovators (5 minutes): Play a short clip of high mountains. The learners stretch their arms up as tall as the peaks. Say "mountains".
  • Little Builders (5 minutes): Roll playdough into long ropes, then weave them over and under into one small mat. Say "mat".
  • Little Thinkers (5 minutes): Line up everything in the room that begins with /m/. Count them, then say which one is biggest.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Learners show their playdough mats and say "My mat!"
  • Say the "m" words together: monkey, mango, moon, motorcycle, mug, milk, mountains, mat

Differentiation

  • Support: Model the over-and-under weaving slowly with two ropes only
  • Extension: Ask learners to make a tiny playdough mango to put on their mat

Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 39, pencils, crayons (yellow, orange and green), sand tray (optional)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Draw a big "m" in the air: "Start in the middle. Line down. Go back up. Hump over and down. Hump over and down again."
  • Call the humps "monkey hills". Learners draw "m" in the sand tray with one finger

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing and Colouring (8 minutes)

  • As the Teacher's Note says, let the learners run a finger along the big "m" on page 39, then colour it in
  • Say "down, hump, hump" as the finger moves

Main Activity -- Trace and Write (10 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check the grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Talk each letter through: "Start at the red dot. Down. Back up. Hump. Hump."
  • Rows 3 and 4 have only starting dots; confident learners may try a few letters with help

Main Activity -- Little Artists (5 minutes)

  • Start the Little Artists activity: colour the picture on the next page, and colour the leaves too
  • Note: the picture on page 39 is a mango with leaves. Suggest yellow or orange for the mango and green for the leaves, and name it as they colour: "mango, mango"

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Recap: "Our letter is m. It says /m/. Monkey, mango, moon, motorcycle, mug!"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use hand-over-hand guidance for the two humps
  • Extension: Trace the "m" rows again in a second colour

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "m", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
