Letter n

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "n" and its sound /n/. Learners look at a big picture of an uncle reading a newspaper and eating nuts, say simple "n" words aloud, and trace the letter "n". Everything is oral and playful. Children listen, point, say, move, colour and trace. They are not asked to read or write words or sentences.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 40
  • Picture cards or flashcards: newspaper, nuts, noodles, nurse, notebook
  • A real newspaper and a small bowl of nuts (check for nut allergies first; show the nuts only if anyone is allergic)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a short alphabet song together
  • Hold up a large letter "n" card and say: "This is n. n says /n/."
  • Children repeat the sound softly and then loudly: "/n/, /n/, /n/!"
  • Show how to make the sound: the tongue touches the top of the mouth and the sound hums through the nose

Main Activity -- Picture Talk (15 minutes)

  • Open page 40. Let the children look at the picture quietly for a moment
  • Ask simple questions and accept one-word or pointing answers:
    • "Who can you see?" (Uncle)
    • "What is Uncle holding?" (newspaper)
    • "What is in the bowl?" (nuts)
  • Point to each cloud word and say it slowly, stretching the first sound: "nnn-newspaper", "nnn-nuts"
  • Children repeat each word twice
  • Read the speech bubble aloud: "Uncle is reading newspaper and eating nuts."
  • Children echo the sentence after you in two short parts:
    • "Uncle is reading newspaper"
    • "and eating nuts"
  • Act it out: children pretend to open a big newspaper, then pretend to crack and eat nuts

Main Activity -- Picture Cards (5 minutes)

  • Point to the three picture cards at the bottom of the page: noodles, nurse, notebook
  • Say each word; children repeat it
  • Play "Point to it": say a word and children point to the correct picture on the page
  • Ask: "Does noodles start with /n/?" Children nod and say "Yes! /n/"

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up the "n" card. Children say the letter name and the sound
  • Quick round: point to one child at a time and say "Tell me one /n/ word." Help with the picture if needed
  • Clap and cheer for every answer

Differentiation

  • Support: Let quieter children point to the picture instead of saying the word, then say it together with them
  • Extension: Ask confident children to say the whole speech-bubble sentence on their own

Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 41
  • Crayons (any colour), pencils
  • Sand tray or a tray of salt for finger tracing (optional)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the picture cards from Day 1 and let children say the words: newspaper, nuts, noodles, nurse, notebook
  • Say the sound together: "/n/, /n/, /n/"

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing and Colouring (8 minutes)

  • Open page 41. Point to the big pink "n" in the cloud
  • Demonstrate the stroke in the air with a big arm: "Start at the top. Go straight down. Go back up, make a little hill, and come down again."
  • Children draw the "n" in the air, then on the table, then on a friend's back
  • Following the Teacher's Note, let the learners run a finger along the big "n", then colour it in
  • Point to the Colour, Say and Trace icons and explain them with actions

Main Activity -- Trace and Write (12 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check that each child holds the pencil with a gentle grip
  • Point to the first black "n" on the top row. Say: "Look at this n."
  • Show the small red dot and arrow on the next "n": "We start at the red dot."
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time, as the Teacher's Note says
  • Say the stroke aloud each time: "down, up, over the hill, down"
  • For the two rows with only red dots, let children try their own "n" starting at each dot. Accept any attempt
  • Praise effort, not neatness

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Colour the notebook picture at the top of the page. Ask: "What is this?" (notebook) "What sound does notebook start with?" (/n/)
  • Children say "n says /n/, notebook!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the child's hand gently over the pencil for the first few letters; use thick crayons if pencils are hard to hold
  • Extension: Let children trace one extra "n" in the sand tray with their eyes closed

Day 3: Little Activities (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 40 (activity boxes)
  • A short video clip of a newspaper being printed
  • Playdough, drinking straws, safe child scissors, string, glue
  • Teacher's Note on page 41 (Little Artists art activity and Activity Book pages)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing the /n/ sound song: "n, n, n, what do you see? A newspaper, nuts, and a notebook for me!"
  • Children point to their noses and say "/n/, nose!" (links with Little Thinkers)

Activity Rotation (20 minutes)

Choose the activities that suit your class and time. Follow the textbook boxes:

  • Little Explorers: Take the learners outside and look up into the trees for a real nest. Sparrows and doves build them. Say "nnn-nest" together when you find one
  • Little Innovators: Play a clip of a newspaper being printed. The learners watch the big rolls of paper spin. Ask: "What is it? Newspaper!"
  • Little Builders: Roll small playdough beads, thread them onto a string, and every learner has a necklace. Say "nnn-necklace" as they wear it
  • Little Artists: Snip drinking straws into short pieces and paste them onto the nest on the next page. Colour the branch. (Adult cuts or supervises closely. Page 41 shows a notebook, not a nest, so draw a simple nest on paper for this activity)
  • Little Thinkers: Count the noses in the room together, one for every learner, and one for you

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit in a circle. Pass the "n" card around. Each child says "n" and the sound /n/
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Pair a shy child with a friendly helper during the activities
  • Extension: Ask children to find something in the classroom that begins with /n/ and show it to you

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "n", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Safety Notes

  • Check for nut allergies before bringing real nuts into the class
  • Supervise scissors and straw pieces closely; small pieces are a choking risk
  • Keep playdough beads away from mouths
