Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 12

Letter l

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "l" through a picture of a boy looking at a lion in the zoo. Learners look at the picture, say the words that begin with "l", enjoy hands-on activities, and trace the letter "l". Everything is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise the letter "l" and say its sound
  • Learn simple words that begin with the letter "l": lion, ladybug, lamp, lake
  • Trace the letter "l"

Key Vocabulary (from textbook pages 32-33)

  • Hero word: lion
  • Picture cards: ladybug, lamp, lake
  • Speech bubble: "The boy is looking at the lion in the zoo."

Teacher Background

  • The letter "l" makes the /l/ sound, as at the start of lion and lamp. Show learners that the tongue touches the top of the mouth behind the teeth.
  • The activity boxes also use lemon, light and lollipop, which all start with "l".
  • Keep sessions short (25-30 minutes) with lots of movement, repetition and praise.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 32, a large letter "l" card, picture flashcards (lion, ladybug, lamp, lake)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a hello song
  • Hold up a large letter "l" card: "This is the letter l. Say it with me: l!"
  • Make the sound together: "/l/, /l/, /l/." Show the tongue lifting up to say it

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Open page 32. Ask: "Where is the boy? What animal can you see?"
  • Point to the lion: "This is a lion. Lions roar! Lion! /l/, /l/, lion!" Learners repeat and do a gentle roar
  • Explain "zoo": "A zoo is a place where we can see animals."
  • Say the speech bubble slowly, pointing to the boy, then the lion: "The boy is looking at the lion in the zoo."
  • Learners echo in chunks: "The boy is looking" / "at the lion" / "in the zoo."
  • Learners make "binoculars" with their hands and look around as they say "looking"
  • Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat in a big voice, a small voice and a whisper:
    • ladybug
    • lamp
    • lake
  • Play "Point and Say": call a word, learners point to the right picture

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up flashcards one by one; learners say the word
  • Ask: "Which letter do these words start with?" (l)

Differentiation

  • Support: Let learners point and roar while the teacher says "lion"
  • Extension: Ask: "What colour is the ladybug? Where is the water?" (lake)

Day 2: Little Activity Boxes (30 minutes)

Materials

  • A lemon and a knife (teacher only), the classroom light switch, playdough, lolly sticks

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the letter "l" card and say the sound together
  • Quick flashcard game with lion, ladybug, lamp, lake

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Choose three or four of the textbook activity boxes for today:

  • Little Explorers (5 minutes): Cut a lemon open. Let every learner smell it, then touch one drop to the tip of the tongue. Say "lemon" together. Check for allergies first.
  • Little Innovators (5 minutes): Switch the classroom light on and off. The learners say "light" when it is on and "dark" when it is off.
  • Little Builders (5 minutes): Roll a playdough ball, push a stick into the bottom of it, and there is a lollipop each. Learners say "lollipop".
  • Little Thinkers (5 minutes): Count the light bulbs in this room together. Say whether there are more bulbs or more windows.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Learners hold up their playdough lollipops and say "My lollipop!"
  • Say the "l" words together: lion, ladybug, lamp, lake, lemon, light, lollipop

Differentiation

  • Support: Model each step; help count by touching or pointing to each bulb
  • Extension: Ask learners to make a tiny playdough ladybug with dots

Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 33, pencils, crayons, sand tray (optional), green paper and glue (optional)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Stand up tall like a long "l": "Start at the top. One long line straight down to the bottom!"
  • Learners draw "l" in the sand tray with one finger

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing and Colouring (8 minutes)

  • As the Teacher's Note says, let the learners run a finger along the big "l" on page 33, then colour it in
  • Say "top to bottom" as the finger moves

Main Activity -- Trace and Write (10 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check the grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Talk each letter through: "Start at the red dot at the top. One long line down. Stop!"
  • Rows 3 and 4 have only starting dots; confident learners may try a few letters with help

Main Activity -- Little Artists (5 minutes)

  • Start the Little Artists activity: tear paper into small pieces and paste them inside the outline on the next page
  • Note: the picture on page 33 is a lamp. Let learners fill the lampshade with torn paper pieces and name it: "lamp, lamp"

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Recap: "Our letter is l. It says /l/. Lion, ladybug, lamp, lake!"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use hand-over-hand guidance and keep the line straight with a ruler edge as a guide
  • Extension: Trace the "l" rows again in a second colour

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "l", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
