Letter l
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford
For the parent or teacher: Read each instruction aloud to the child. The child points, circles, colours, traces and says. No reading or writing of words is expected.
Activity A: Say the Words
Point to each word and say it. The child repeats it.
- lion
- ladybug
- lamp
- lake
Now say "lion" with a big, soft roar!
Activity B: Circle the Letter l
Say: "Find the letter l. Circle every l you see. Be careful, i has a dot!"

How many did you circle? Count together out loud.
Activity C: Match the Word to the Picture
Say each word. The child draws a line from the word to the correct picture (draw or stick simple pictures on the right).

| lake | d. it gives light in a room |
Activity D: Colour the l Pictures
Say: "Colour the pictures that start with l."
- lion -- colour it yellow and brown
- ladybug -- colour it red with black dots
- lamp -- colour the shade any colour you like
- lake -- colour the water blue
Ask the child to say each word before colouring.
Activity E: Light or Dark?
Switch a light on and off. The child says the word.
- Light on -- the child says: "light"
- Light off -- the child says: "dark"
Draw a sun in the box for light and a moon in the box for dark.

Activity F: Trace the Letter l
Say the steps as the child traces: "Start at the top dot. One long line down. Stop!"
Trace the big dotted l with a finger.
Trace the big dotted l with a crayon.
Trace one row of small dotted l letters with a pencil:

Activity G: Say the Sentence
Point to the picture on textbook page 32. Say the sentence. The child repeats it.
"The boy is looking at the lion in the zoo."
Ask:
- Who is looking at the lion? (the boy)
- Where is the lion? (in the zoo)

Colour a star when the child finishes:
- I can say the l sound.
- I can find the letter l.
- I can trace the letter l.
