Letter k

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

For the parent or teacher: Read each instruction aloud to the child. The child points, circles, colours, traces and says. No reading or writing of words is expected.

Activity A: Say the Words

Point to each word and say it. The child repeats it and does a little kick.

  1. king
  2. kangaroo
  3. kiwi
  4. koala

Activity B: Circle the Letter k

Say: "Find the letter k. Circle every k you see."

How many did you circle? Count together out loud.

Activity C: Match the Word to the Picture

Say each word. The child draws a line from the word to the correct picture (draw or stick simple pictures on the right).

Word Picture
king a. a grey animal hugging a branch
kangaroo b. a fruit that is brown outside and green inside
kiwi c. a man with a crown
koala d. an animal that hops

Activity D: Colour the k Pictures

Say: "Colour the pictures that start with k."

  1. king -- colour his crown yellow
  2. kangaroo -- colour it brown
  3. kiwi -- colour it green inside
  4. koala -- colour it grey

Ask the child to say each word before colouring.

Activity E: Listen for /k/

Say each word. If it starts with the /k/ sound, the child claps. If not, the child sits still.

  1. key -- clap or still?
  2. apple -- clap or still?
  3. kettle -- clap or still?
  4. dog -- clap or still?
  5. king -- clap or still?

Activity F: Trace the Letter k

Say the steps as the child traces: "Start at the top dot. Long line down. Lift. In. Out."

  1. Trace the big dotted k with a finger.

  2. Trace the big dotted k with a crayon.

  3. Trace one row of small dotted k letters with a pencil:

    k k k k k k

Activity G: Say the Sentence

Point to the picture on textbook page 30. Say the sentence in small parts. The child repeats each part.

"A king and a friendly kangaroo are together in a castle!"

Ask:

  • Who is wearing a crown? (the king)
  • Where are they? (in a castle)

Well Done!

Colour a star when the child finishes:

  • I can say the k sound.
  • I can find the letter k.
  • I can trace the letter k.
