Letter k

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "k" through a picture of a king and a friendly kangaroo in a castle. Learners look at the picture, say the words that begin with "k", enjoy hands-on activities, and trace the letter "k". Everything is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise the letter "k" and say its sound
  • Learn simple words that begin with the letter "k": king, kangaroo, kiwi, koala
  • Trace the letter "k"

Key Vocabulary (from textbook pages 30-31)

  • Hero words: king, kangaroo
  • Picture cards: kiwi, koala, king
  • Speech bubble: "A king and a friendly kangaroo are together in a castle!"

Teacher Background

  • The letter "k" makes the /k/ sound, as at the start of king and kiwi.
  • The Little Innovators activity uses a picture of a cat. Cat also begins with the /k/ sound but is spelt with "c". If a learner taps the cat, praise the listening: "Yes, cat has the /k/ sound too!"
  • Keep sessions short (25-30 minutes) with lots of movement, repetition and praise.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 30, a large letter "k" card, picture flashcards (king, kangaroo, kiwi, koala), a paper crown (optional)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a hello song
  • Hold up a large letter "k" card: "This is the letter k. Say it with me: k!"
  • Make the sound together with a little kick: "/k/, /k/, /k/"

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Open page 30. Ask: "What can you see? Who is sitting on the big chair?"
  • Point to the king: "This is a king. He has a crown. King! /k/, /k/, king!" Learners repeat. Let one learner wear the paper crown
  • Point to the kangaroo: "This is a kangaroo. Kangaroos hop! Kangaroo!" Learners repeat and hop on the spot
  • Say the speech bubble slowly, pointing to each part: "A king and a friendly kangaroo are together in a castle!"
  • Learners echo in chunks: "A king" / "and a friendly kangaroo" / "are together in a castle!"
  • Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat in a big voice, a small voice and a whisper:
    • kiwi
    • koala
    • king
  • Play "Point and Say": call a word, learners point to the right picture

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up flashcards one by one; learners say the word
  • Ask: "Which letter do these words start with?" (k)

Differentiation

  • Support: Let learners do the action (wear crown, hop) while the teacher says the word
  • Extension: Ask: "Is the kangaroo happy or sad? Is the king happy?"

Day 2: Little Activity Boxes (30 minutes)

Materials

  • A real key, a tablet with mixed pictures (apple, key, cat, kettle, dog), playdough, a plastic knife or lolly stick

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the letter "k" card and say the sound with a kick
  • Quick flashcard game with king, kangaroo, kiwi, koala

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Choose three or four of the textbook activity boxes for today:

  • Little Explorers (5 minutes): Pass a real key round the group. Let every learner feel its little teeth and say /k/ for key.
  • Little Innovators (5 minutes): Show mixed pictures on the tablet -- apple, key, cat, kettle, dog. Each learner taps only the /k/ ones.
  • Little Builders (5 minutes): Roll a playdough stick. Flatten a round head at one end and cut two small teeth at the other. Learners say "key" when finished.
  • Little Thinkers (5 minutes): Hunt for three things that begin with /k/, line them up on the table and count them together.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Learners hold up their playdough keys and pretend to open a door: "Click! Key!"
  • Say the /k/ words together

Differentiation

  • Support: Give the learner the key to hold while you say "k, k, key"; model each playdough step
  • Extension: Ask learners to find one more /k/ thing in the room by themselves

Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 31, pencils, crayons (brown and other colours), sand tray (optional)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Draw a big "k" in the air: "Start at the top. Long line straight down. Lift. Go to the middle. Slant in to touch the line. Slant out to the bottom."
  • Learners draw "k" in the sand tray with one finger

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing and Colouring (8 minutes)

  • As the Teacher's Note says, let the learners run a finger along the big "k" on page 31, then colour it in
  • Say "long line, in, out" as the finger moves

Main Activity -- Trace and Write (10 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check the grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Talk each letter through: "Start at the red dot. Long line down. Lift. In. Out."
  • Rows 3 and 4 have only starting dots; confident learners may try a few letters with help

Main Activity -- Little Artists (5 minutes)

  • Start the Little Artists activity: colour the picture on the next page, choosing colours with the learners
  • Note: the picture on page 31 is a kiwi. Suggest brown for the outside and green for the inside, and name it as they colour: "kiwi, kiwi"

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Recap: "Our letter is k. It says /k/. King, kangaroo, kiwi, koala!"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use hand-over-hand guidance for the two slanting lines
  • Extension: Trace the "k" rows again in a second colour

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "k", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
