Letter j

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "j" through a busy airport picture with a blue jet and a little green jeep. Learners look at the picture, say the words that begin with "j", enjoy hands-on activities, and trace the letter "j". Everything is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Teacher Background

  • The letter "j" makes the /j/ sound, as at the start of jam and juice.
  • The speech bubble calls the jet "a blue plane". Explain simply: "A jet is a kind of plane. It goes very fast."
  • Keep sessions short (25-30 minutes) with lots of movement, repetition and praise.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 28, a large letter "j" card, picture flashcards (jet, jeep, juice, jam, jacket)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a hello song and do three little jumps together
  • Hold up a large letter "j" card: "This is the letter j. Say it with me: j!"
  • Make the sound together while jumping: "/j/, /j/, /j/"

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Open page 28. Ask: "Where are we? Can you see planes?"
  • Point to the jet: "This is a jet. It is a fast plane. Jet! /j/, /j/, jet!" Learners repeat and zoom arms like wings
  • Point to the jeep: "This is a jeep. Jeep! Beep beep, jeep!" Learners repeat and pretend to drive
  • Say the speech bubble slowly, pointing at the plane, the jeep and the airport: "A blue plane and the little green jeep standing together at the airport."
  • Learners echo in chunks: "A blue plane" / "and the little green jeep" / "at the airport"
  • Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat in a big voice, a small voice and a whisper:
    • juice
    • jam
    • jacket
  • Play "Point and Say": call a word, learners point to the right picture

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up flashcards; learners say the word and do one jump for each "j" word
  • Ask: "Which letter do these words start with?" (j)

Differentiation

  • Support: Let learners point and do the action (zoom, drive) while you say the word
  • Extension: Ask confident learners the colours: "What colour is the plane? What colour is the jeep?"

Day 2: Little Activity Boxes (30 minutes)

Materials

  • A jug of water, a straw for each learner, a tablet with a join-the-dots app, playdough, textbook page 28

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the letter "j" card and jump while saying the sound
  • Quick flashcard game with jet, jeep, juice, jam, jacket

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Choose three or four of the textbook activity boxes for today:

  • Little Explorers (5 minutes): Fill a jug with water. Give each learner a straw and let them blow until the water bubbles. Say "jug" together.
  • Little Innovators (5 minutes): Open a join-the-dots app and let every learner trace the letter "j" from one dot to the next.
  • Little Builders (5 minutes): Give out playdough and pinch a jar each -- round body, flat bottom, a little lid on top. Say "jar" and "jam".
  • Little Thinkers (5 minutes): Count the wheels on the jeep together on page 28, then say how many wheels you can see on one side.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Learners hold up their playdough jars and say "My jam jar!"
  • Say all five "j" words together

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the jug steady and help with blowing (not sucking) through the straw; model each playdough step
  • Extension: Ask learners to make a tiny playdough jacket or jet

Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 29, pencils, crayons, sand tray (optional)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Draw a big "j" in the air together: "Start in the middle. Go straight down, below the line. Curl round like a hook. Lift. Dot on top!"
  • Learners draw "j" in the sand tray with one finger

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing and Colouring (8 minutes)

  • As the Teacher's Note says, let the learners run a finger along the big "j" on page 29, then colour it in
  • Point out that "j" goes down below the line and has a little tail

Main Activity -- Trace and Write (10 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check the grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Talk each letter through: "Start at the red dot. Down, down, below the line. Curl. Lift. Dot!"
  • Rows 3 and 4 have only starting dots; confident learners may try a few letters with help

Main Activity -- Little Artists (5 minutes)

  • Start the Little Artists activity: colour the picture on the next page, then fill its circles with different colours
  • Note: the picture on page 29 is a glass of juice with lemon slices. Name it as they colour: "juice, juice"

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Recap: "Our letter is j. It says /j/. Jet, jeep, juice, jam, jacket!"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use hand-over-hand guidance; allow finger tracing on the big letter only
  • Extension: Trace the "j" rows again in a second colour

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "j", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
