Letter i

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "i" through a snowy picture of a cute insect standing by an igloo. Learners look at the picture, say the words that begin with "i", enjoy hands-on activities, and trace the letter "i". Everything is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Teacher Background

  • The short /i/ sound is heard at the start of igloo, insect and iguana.
  • In ice-cream and iron, the letter "i" says its name (long "i"). Keep it simple: "These words start with the letter i too. Here, i says its name."
  • Keep sessions short (25-30 minutes) with lots of movement, repetition and praise.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 26, a large letter "i" card, picture flashcards (igloo, insect, ice-cream, iguana, iron)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a hello song and clap hands together
  • Hold up a large letter "i" card: "This is the letter i. Say it with me: i!"
  • Make the short sound together: "/i/, /i/, /i/." Wiggle a finger like a tiny insect while saying it

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Open page 26. Ask: "What can you see? Is it hot or cold here?"
  • Point to the insect: "This is an insect. Insect. /i/, /i/, insect!" Learners repeat
  • Point to the igloo: "This is an igloo. It is a house made of snow. Igloo!" Learners repeat
  • Say the speech bubble slowly and point to each part of the picture: "A cute insect is standing by an igloo in the snow."
  • Learners echo the sentence in two short chunks: "A cute insect is standing" / "by an igloo in the snow."
  • Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat three times, loud, soft and whispering:
    • ice-cream
    • iguana
    • iron
  • Play "Point and Say": call a word, learners point to the right picture in the book

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up the flashcards one by one; learners shout the word
  • Ask: "Which letter do all these words start with?" (i)

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to the picture instead of saying the word; say it together with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to say the whole speech-bubble sentence on their own

Day 2: Little Activity Boxes (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Bowl of water, ice cubes, a tablet, white playdough, cotton buds, paint

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the letter "i" card and say the sound together: "/i/, /i/, igloo!"
  • Quick flashcard game with igloo, insect, ice-cream, iguana, iron

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Choose three or four of the textbook activity boxes for today:

  • Little Explorers (5 minutes): Drop ice cubes into a bowl of water and let the learners watch them shrink away to nothing. Say "ice, ice" as they melt.
  • Little Innovators (5 minutes): Point out the internet icon on the tablet. Let every learner tap it once and name the letter.
  • Little Builders (5 minutes): Give out white playdough and build an igloo each -- a round dome, then a little tunnel door. Learners say "igloo" when finished.
  • Little Thinkers (5 minutes): Look around the room and count everything that begins with /i/. Say the number out loud together.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Learners show their playdough igloos and say "My igloo!"
  • Sing the sound once more: "/i/, /i/, /i/"

Differentiation

  • Support: Model each step with your own playdough; guide small hands
  • Extension: Ask learners to add a little playdough insect next to their igloo

Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 27, pencils, crayons, a sand tray or tray of rice (optional), paint and cotton buds

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Draw a big "i" in the air together: "Start in the middle, go straight down. Lift. Dot on top!"
  • Learners draw "i" on the carpet or in the sand tray with one finger

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing and Colouring (8 minutes)

  • As the Teacher's Note says, let the learners run a finger along the big "i" on page 27, then colour it in
  • Say the sound each time the finger reaches the dot

Main Activity -- Trace and Write (10 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check a gentle, correct grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Talk the stroke through for every letter: "Start at the red dot. Straight down. Lift. Dot!"
  • Rows 3 and 4 have only starting dots; let confident learners try a few letters with a hand-over-hand helper if needed

Main Activity -- Little Artists (5 minutes)

  • Start the Little Artists activity: dip cotton buds in paint and dot the picture on the next page until it is filled
  • Note: the colouring picture on page 27 is an ice-cream. Name it as they dot: "ice-cream, ice-cream"

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Recap: "Our letter is i. It says /i/. Igloo, insect, iguana!"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use hand-over-hand guidance and chunky crayons; allow finger tracing only
  • Extension: Let learners trace the "i" rows a second time in a different colour

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "i", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
