Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "j" when it is named
2. Say the sound /j/
3. Name the pictures jet, jeep, juice, jam and jacket
4. Repeat the sentence about the blue plane and the little green jeep with help
5. Trace the letter "j" from the starting dot

All assessment at this age is oral, practical and observed during play. No reading or written answers are expected.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Place letter cards j, i, a and o on the carpet. Say "Find j!" The learner picks up the card
• Criteria: Picks the correct card without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Show the letter "j" card and ask, "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /j/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1 and Day 2)

• Task: Show the flashcards one at a time: jet, jeep, juice, jam, jacket
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 5 pictures
• Rating: 5 named / 3-4 named / 0-2 named

4. Sentence Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: The teacher says "A blue plane and the little green jeep standing together at the airport." The learner repeats it in chunks
• Criteria: Repeats at least "a blue plane" and "a little green jeep"
• Rating: Whole sentence / Part of sentence / Key words only

5. Counting Wheels (During Day 2)

• Task: Learner counts the wheels of the jeep they can see on page 28
• Criteria: Points to each wheel and says a number
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

6. Tracing Observation (During Day 3)

• Task: Learner traces the dotted "j" rows on page 29
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot
  • Goes down below the line
  • Curls the tail to the left
  • Adds the dot on top
• Rating: Neat and correct / Trying well / Needs hand-over-hand help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, 3-4 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to the letter "j" on a card with three other letters. (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of the letter "j". (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (5 marks)

• Show each picture and ask "What is this?" (1 mark each)
  • jet
  • jeep
  • juice
  • jam
  • jacket

Part C: Speaking (1 mark)

• Look at page 28 and tell me what you see. (Any attempt with "jet" or "plane" and "jeep" earns the mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Trace one row of "j" from the starting dots
  • Line down with a curly tail (1 mark)
  • Dot on top (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

  • Trace "j" in sand or with a finger on the table, saying "down, curl, dot"
  • Practise the five picture words with flashcards for 2 minutes each day
  • Take home the worksheet to do with a parent
