For the parent or teacher: Read each instruction aloud to the child. The child points, circles, colours, traces and says. No reading or writing of words is expected.

Activity A: Say the Words

Point to each word and say it. The child repeats it after you.

1. igloo
2. insect
3. ice-cream
4. iguana
5. iron

Now say them all again very softly, like a tiny insect.

Activity B: Circle the Letter i

Say: "Find the letter i. Circle every i you see."

How many did you circle? Count together out loud.

Activity C: Match the Word to the Picture

Say each word. The child draws a line from the word to the correct picture (draw or stick simple pictures on the right).

iguana	c. a cold treat in a glass bowl
ice-cream	d. a green lizard on a branch
iron	e. something that makes clothes flat

Activity D: Colour the i Pictures

Say: "Colour the pictures that start with i."

1. igloo -- colour it
2. insect -- colour it
3. ice-cream -- colour it
4. iguana -- colour it
5. iron -- colour it

Ask the child to say each word before colouring.

Activity E: Trace the Letter i

Say the steps as the child traces: "Start at the dot. Straight down. Lift. Dot on top!"

1. Trace the big dotted i with a finger.

2. Trace the big dotted i with a crayon.

3. Trace one row of small dotted i letters with a pencil:

   i i i i i i

Activity F: Say the Sentence

Point to the picture on textbook page 26. Say the sentence and the child repeats it.

"A cute insect is standing by an igloo in the snow."

Ask:

• Where is the insect? (by the igloo)
• What is all around? (snow)
