Letter h

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "h" to young learners (age 3-4). Children visit a farm barn where a horse and a little hen are eating their food. They look at the big letter "h", say its sound /h/, name the words horse, hen, hill and hut, trace the letter "h", and colour the hut picture. All work is oral, playful and hands-on. Children are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise the letter "h" and say its sound /h/
  • Learn simple words that begin with the letter "h": horse, hen, hill, hut
  • Trace the letter "h" with a finger and then with a pencil
  • Listen to and repeat the sentence "A cute horse and a little hen are eating their yummy food"
  • Build fine motor skills through playdough modelling, hand printing and tracing

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 22
  • Picture cards: horse, hen, hill, hut
  • A large letter "h" card

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a short alphabet song together, stopping at "h"
  • Hold up the big "h" card. Say: "This is h. h says /h/."
  • Show children the sound: hold a hand in front of the mouth and breathe out a little puff of warm air
  • Children say /h/ three times and feel the puff on their hands

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Open page 22. Ask: "What can you see?" Accept any answers
  • Point to the horse eating grass and say "horse". Children repeat
  • Point to the hen pecking seeds and say "hen". Children repeat
  • Read the speech bubble slowly: "A cute horse and a little hen are eating their yummy food"
  • Say it again in short parts; children echo each part:
    • "A cute horse"
    • "and a little hen"
    • "are eating their yummy food"
  • Point to the three picture cards one at a time:
    • hill -- "Big and green! hill"
    • hut -- "A little house with a roof of straw! hut"
    • horse -- "It can gallop! horse"
  • Stretch the first sound: "h-h-h-hen", "h-h-h-hill", "h-h-h-hut"
  • Show the big green "h" on the page. Children trace it in the air with one finger

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Play "Show me": say a word, children point to the matching picture
  • Everyone gallops like a horse on the spot and says /h/ /h/ /h/

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy children point instead of saying the word
  • Extension: Ask confident children to name all four words on the page

Day 2: Sound and Play (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 22 (activity boxes)
  • A hat
  • A short video clip of hands being washed properly, and access to a sink
  • Playdough

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up the "h" card. Children say "h says /h/"
  • Quick picture recall: horse, hen, hill, hut

Main Activity -- Little Explorers (6 minutes)

  • Bring a hat into the room
  • Let every child try it on
  • Say /h/ for hat as each child wears it: "h-h-hat!"

Main Activity -- Little Innovators (8 minutes)

  • Play a short clip of hands being washed properly
  • Take the children to the sink afterwards
  • Children copy every step from the clip
  • Say "hands -- h-h-hands"

Main Activity -- Little Builders (7 minutes)

  • Give out playdough
  • Roll a playdough ball flat, pinch up a crown and press out a brim
  • One hat each. Children hold up their hats and say "hat"

Wrap-Up -- Little Thinkers (4 minutes)

  • Walk round the room together
  • Count everything that begins with /h/
  • Say the number out loud as a class

Differentiation

  • Support: Model the playdough hat step by step next to the child
  • Extension: Ask children to find one more /h/ thing in the room

Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 23, pencils, paint, a plate, wet wipes, crayons

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Children puff /h/ onto their hands, like warming cold hands
  • Draw a big "h" in the air together

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing (5 minutes)

  • Following the Teacher's Note, let children run a finger along the big pink "h"
  • Describe the stroke: "Start at the top. Go straight down, all the way. Go back up halfway, then make a hump -- over and down."
  • Children colour in the big "h"

Main Activity -- Pencil Tracing (10 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check a gentle, correct pencil grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • The first row shows the steps: first the tall line, then the hump
  • Start each "h" at the red dot and follow the arrow
  • On the dot rows, the teacher guides a hand where needed

Main Activity -- Little Artists (7 minutes)

  • Children press a painted hand onto page 23
  • The palm is the hen and the fingers are her tail
  • Say "hand -- h-h-hand" and "hen -- h-h-hen"
  • When dry, children may colour the hut picture

Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

  • Each child holds up their page and says "h says /h/"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick pencil or grip; trace hand over hand
  • Extension: Let children try an "h" on the dot rows on their own

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "h", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
  • Keep wet wipes ready for the hand-print activity
  • Supervise children closely at the sink
