Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 6
Letter f
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "f" to young learners (age 3-4). Children visit a pretty pond where a friendly frog and a little fish are playing. They look at the big letter "f", say its sound /f/, name the words fish, frog, flowers, fox and fruits, trace the letter "f", and colour the flowers picture. All work is oral, playful and hands-on. Children are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Objectives
- Recognise the letter "f" and say its sound /f/
- Learn simple words that begin with the letter "f": fish, frog, flowers, fox, fruits
- Trace the letter "f" with a finger and then with a pencil
- Listen to and repeat the sentence "A friendly frog and a little fish are playing in the pond together."
- Build fine motor skills through blowing, flag-making, finger printing and tracing
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 18
- Picture cards: fish, frog, flowers, fox, fruits
- A large letter "f" card
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sing a short alphabet song together, stopping at "f"
- Hold up the big "f" card. Say: "This is f. f says /f/."
- Show children how to make the sound: top teeth gently on the bottom lip, then blow softly
- Children say /f/ like a gentle wind, then a bigger wind
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Open page 18. Ask: "What can you see?" Accept any answers
- Point to the fish and say "fish". Children repeat
- Point to the frog on the lily pad and say "frog". Children repeat
- Read the speech bubble slowly: "A friendly frog and a little fish are playing in the pond together."
- Say it again in short parts; children echo each part:
- "A friendly frog"
- "and a little fish"
- "are playing in the pond together."
- Point to the three picture cards one at a time:
- flowers -- "Pink and smiling! flowers"
- fox -- "Orange and fluffy! fox"
- fruits -- "Yummy! fruits"
- Stretch the first sound: "f-f-f-fish", "f-f-f-frog", "f-f-f-fox"
- Show the big yellow "f" on the page. Children trace it in the air with one finger
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Play "Show me": say a word, children point to the matching picture
- Everyone hops like a frog and says /f/ on each hop
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy children point instead of saying the word
- Extension: Ask confident children to name all five words on the page
Day 2: Sound and Play (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 18 (activity boxes)
- A bowl of water and a paper fish
- A tablet with a finger-tracing app
- Paper and a stick for each child
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Hold up the "f" card. Children say "f says /f/"
- Quick picture recall: fish, frog, flowers, fox, fruits
Main Activity -- Little Explorers (7 minutes)
- Fill a bowl with water and float a paper fish on it
- Let each child blow the fish across to the far side
- Point out that blowing feels like the /f/ sound: "f-f-f-fish!"
Main Activity -- Little Innovators (6 minutes)
- Open the finger-tracing app
- Let every child draw "f" on the screen with one finger
- Say the stroke with them: "Over, down, and across"
Main Activity -- Little Builders (7 minutes)
- Give out paper and a stick to each child
- Make a flag together by fixing the paper to the stick
- Wave the flags together and say /f/
Wrap-Up -- Little Thinkers (5 minutes)
- Hold up your left hand
- Count the fingers together: one, two, three, four, five
- Say "fingers -- f-f-fingers" and "five -- f-f-five"
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the child's finger on the tablet and trace together
- Extension: Ask children to count the fingers on the other hand too
Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 19, pencils, poster paint, water, plates, wet wipes
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Children blow out a pretend candle with a long /f/
- Draw a big "f" in the air together
Main Activity -- Finger Tracing (5 minutes)
- Following the Teacher's Note, let children run a finger along the big pink "f"
- Describe the stroke: "Start near the top. Curve over, then go straight down. Lift your finger and make a little line across."
- Children colour in the big "f"
Main Activity -- Pencil Tracing (10 minutes)
- Hand out pencils. Check a gentle, correct pencil grip
- Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- Start each "f" at the red dot and follow the arrow
- Remind children to add the little line across at the end
- On the dot rows, the teacher guides a hand where needed
Main Activity -- Little Artists (7 minutes)
- Mix poster paint with a little water on a plate
- Children dip three fingers together and print them on page 19
- Say "fingers, f-f-f" as they print
- Children may then colour the flowers picture
Wrap-Up (3 minutes)
- Each child holds up their page and says "f says /f/"
- Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick pencil or grip; trace hand over hand
- Extension: Let children try an "f" on the dot rows on their own
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- Let the learners run a finger along "f", then colour it in
- Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
- Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
- Keep wet wipes ready for the paint activity
