Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, children should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "f" when it is shown or named
2. Say the sound /f/
3. Name the pictures fish, frog, flowers, fox and fruits
4. Repeat the sentence "A friendly frog and a little fish are playing in the pond together."
5. Trace the letter "f" starting at the red dot

All assessment is done by watching and listening. Children are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (e, f, t). Ask: "Where is f?"
• Criteria: Child points to "f" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Hold up the "f" card. Ask: "What does f say?"
• Criteria: Child says /f/ with teeth on lip (not "fuh")
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 2)

• Task: Show the pictures fish, frog, flowers, fox and fruits one at a time. Ask: "What is this?"
• Criteria: Child names at least 3 out of 5 pictures
• Rating: 5 named / 3-4 named / Needs practice

4. Sentence Repeat (During Day 2)

• Task: Say the sentence in three short parts. Child repeats each part.
• Criteria: Child says "friendly frog" and "little fish"
• Rating: Yes / Part of it / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 3)

• Task: Child traces "f" on page 19
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot
  • Curves over and goes down
  • Adds the little line across
• Rating: Confident / Trying / Needs support

Summative Assessment

End-of-Lesson Check (one child at a time, 3-4 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "f" on page 18. (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "f". (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (5 marks)

• Name each picture: fish, frog, flowers, fox, fruits (1 mark each)

Part C: Listen and Point (2 marks)

1. "Show me the frog." (1 mark)
2. "Show me the fish." (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (3 marks)

• Starts at the red dot (1 mark)
• Follows the dotted line down (1 mark)
• Adds the line across (1 mark)

Total: 12 marks
