Letter e

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "e" to young learners (age 3-4). Children meet a friendly eagle sitting on an elephant's head in a sunny grassland. They look at the big letter "e", say its sound /e/, name the pictures (eggplant, elephant, eagle), trace the letter "e", and colour the eagle picture. All work is oral, playful and hands-on. Children are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise the letter "e" and say its sound /e/
  • Learn simple words that begin with the letter "e": eagle, elephant, eggplant
  • Trace the letter "e" with a finger and then with a pencil
  • Listen to and repeat the sentence "Eagle and elephant are good friends"
  • Build fine motor skills through folding, colouring and tracing

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 16
  • Picture cards or real items: an eggplant, a toy elephant, a picture of an eagle
  • A large letter "e" card

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a short alphabet song together, stopping at "e"
  • Hold up the big "e" card. Say: "This is e. e says /e/."
  • Children repeat the sound three times: loud voice, whisper voice, happy voice

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Open page 16. Ask: "What can you see?" Accept any answers
  • Point to the elephant and say "elephant". Children repeat
  • Point to the eagle on the elephant's head and say "eagle". Children repeat
  • Read the speech bubble slowly: "Eagle and elephant are good friends"
  • Children say the sentence with you, clapping on "eagle" and "elephant"
  • Point to the three picture cards one at a time:
    • eggplant -- "Is it purple? Yes! eggplant"
    • elephant -- "Big ears! elephant"
    • eagle -- "It can fly! eagle"
  • Stretch the first sound: "e-e-e-elephant", "e-e-e-eggplant"
  • Show the big yellow "e" on the page. Children trace it in the air with one finger

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Play "Show me": say a word, children point to the matching picture card
  • Everyone makes an elephant trunk with their arm and says /e/ /e/ elephant

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy children point instead of saying the word
  • Extension: Ask confident children to name all three picture cards on their own

Day 2: Sound and Play (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 16 (activity boxes)
  • A boiled egg, a sheet of paper for each child, a short elephant video clip

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up the "e" card. Children say "e says /e/"
  • Quick picture recall: eggplant, elephant, eagle

Main Activity -- Little Explorers (7 minutes)

  • Bring a boiled egg to the table. Peel it while the children watch
  • Say: "egg -- e-e-egg". Let each child hold a piece

Main Activity -- Little Innovators (5 minutes)

  • Play a short clip of an elephant
  • Pause it and count together: the elephant's two eyes and two big ears

Main Activity -- Little Builders (8 minutes)

  • Give each child a sheet of paper
  • Fold it into an envelope together, corner to corner, pressing each crease flat
  • Say "envelope -- e-e-envelope" as you fold

Wrap-Up -- Little Thinkers (5 minutes)

  • Hunt across page 16 together and count everything that begins with /e/
  • Say the number out loud as a class

Differentiation

  • Support: Fold the envelope hand over hand with the child
  • Extension: Let children lead the counting on the page

Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 17, pencils, crayons (grey, pink and other colours)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Children say the sound /e/ and flap their arms like an eagle
  • Draw a big "e" in the air together

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing (5 minutes)

  • Following the Teacher's Note, let children run a finger along the big pink "e"
  • Describe the stroke: "Start in the middle. Go straight across. Curve up and over, round and down, and stop."
  • Children colour in the big "e"

Main Activity -- Pencil Tracing (10 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check a gentle, correct pencil grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Start each "e" at the red dot and follow the arrow
  • On the dot rows, the teacher guides a hand where needed

Main Activity -- Little Artists (7 minutes)

  • Children colour the eagle picture on page 17 with their crayons
  • Say "eagle" each time a child picks a new crayon
  • Note: the Little Artists box on page 16 says "colour the elephant" (grey body, pink ears), but the picture on page 17 is an eagle -- let children colour the eagle
  • Praise every effort; neatness is not the goal at this age

Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

  • Each child holds up their page and says "e says /e/"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick crayon or pencil grip; trace hand over hand
  • Extension: Let children try an "e" on the dot rows on their own

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "e", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
  • Keep every activity short, cheerful and active for young learners
  • Note: "eagle" starts with the letter e but says its name ("ee"); "elephant" and "eggplant" show the short /e/ sound best
