Letter g

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "g" to young learners (age 3-4). Children meet a girl sitting on a picnic blanket in a green field, eating a guava. They look at the big letter "g", say its sound /g/, name the words girl, guava, gate, gift and guitar, trace the letter "g", and colour the gift picture. All work is oral, playful and hands-on. Children are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise the letter "g" and say its sound /g/
  • Learn simple words that begin with the letter "g": girl, guava, gate, gift, guitar
  • Trace the letter "g" with a finger and then with a pencil
  • Listen to and repeat the sentence "The girl is eating delicious guava"
  • Build fine motor skills through playdough rolling, thumb printing and tracing

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 20
  • Picture cards: girl, guava, gate, gift, guitar
  • A large letter "g" card
  • A real guava, if available

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sing a short alphabet song together, stopping at "g"
  • Hold up the big "g" card. Say: "This is g. g says /g/."
  • Show children the sound comes from the back of the mouth, a short quick /g/
  • Children say /g/ three times: loud voice, whisper voice, happy voice

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Open page 20. Ask: "What can you see?" Accept any answers
  • Point to the girl and say "girl". Children repeat
  • Point to the guava in her hands and the basket and say "guava". Children repeat
  • If you have a real guava, show it and let children smell it
  • Read the speech bubble slowly: "The girl is eating delicious guava"
  • Children say the sentence with you and pretend to take a bite: "Yum!"
  • Point to the three picture cards one at a time:
    • gate -- "We open it to go in! gate"
    • gift -- "A present with a red bow! gift"
    • guitar -- "It makes music! guitar"
  • Stretch the first sound: "g-g-g-gate", "g-g-g-gift"
  • Show the big pink "g" on the page. Children trace it in the air with one finger

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Play "Show me": say a word, children point to the matching picture
  • Everyone pretends to play the guitar and sings /g/ /g/ /g/

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy children point instead of saying the word
  • Extension: Ask confident children to name all five words on the page

Day 2: Sound and Play (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 20 (activity boxes)
  • Access to the school garden
  • A tablet with a letter-sound game
  • Green playdough

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up the "g" card. Children say "g says /g/"
  • Quick picture recall: girl, guava, gate, gift, guitar

Main Activity -- Little Explorers (8 minutes)

  • Walk the children round the garden and look for something green growing
  • Let every child touch one leaf
  • Say "green -- g-g-green" and "garden -- g-g-garden"

Main Activity -- Little Innovators (6 minutes)

  • Play a letter-sound game on the tablet
  • Each child takes one turn at finding the letter "g"
  • Clap for every child who finds it

Main Activity -- Little Builders (7 minutes)

  • Give out green playdough
  • Roll small balls together
  • Press them together into one heavy bunch of grapes
  • Say "grapes -- g-g-grapes"

Wrap-Up -- Little Thinkers (4 minutes)

  • The book asks children to count the goat's legs together, then count their own, and say how many more legs the goat has
  • There is no goat on page 20, so show a goat picture or toy goat first
  • Count: goat -- one, two, three, four. Me -- one, two. The goat has two more legs

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the child's hand to roll the playdough balls
  • Extension: Ask children to say one more thing that is green

Day 3: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 21, pencils, green paint, a plate, wet wipes, crayons

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Children say /g/ and pretend to open a big gate
  • Draw a big "g" in the air together

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing (5 minutes)

  • Following the Teacher's Note, let children run a finger along the big pink "g"
  • Describe the stroke: "Start at the top. Go round like a ball. Go back up, then straight down, and curl a little hook at the bottom."
  • Children colour in the big "g"

Main Activity -- Pencil Tracing (10 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils. Check a gentle, correct pencil grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • The first row shows the steps: first the round part, then the line down with the hook
  • Start each "g" at the red dot and follow the arrow
  • On the dot rows, the teacher guides a hand where needed

Main Activity -- Little Artists (7 minutes)

  • Children press a thumb into green paint and make thumbprints on page 21, one for each grape
  • Note: the book says "fill the grapes on the next page", but the picture on page 21 is a gift box -- let children make thumbprints around the gift, then colour the gift
  • Say "gift -- g-g-gift" as they colour

Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

  • Each child holds up their page and says "g says /g/"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick pencil or grip; trace hand over hand
  • Extension: Let children try a "g" on the dot rows on their own

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "g", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
  • Keep wet wipes ready for the paint activity
  • Take care in the garden walk; hold hands in a line
