Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, children should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "e" when it is shown or named
2. Say the sound /e/
3. Name the pictures eggplant, elephant and eagle
4. Repeat the sentence "Eagle and elephant are good friends"
5. Trace the letter "e" starting at the red dot

All assessment is done by watching and listening. Children are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (a, e, c). Ask: "Where is e?"
• Criteria: Child points to "e" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Hold up the "e" card. Ask: "What does e say?"
• Criteria: Child says /e/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 2)

• Task: Show the picture cards eggplant, elephant and eagle one at a time. Ask: "What is this?"
• Criteria: Child names at least 2 out of 3 pictures
• Rating: 3 named / 2 named / Needs practice

4. Sentence Repeat (During Day 2)

• Task: Say "Eagle and elephant are good friends". Child repeats it.
• Criteria: Child says most of the sentence, including "eagle" and "elephant"
• Rating: Yes / Part of it / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 3)

• Task: Child traces "e" on page 17
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot
  • Goes across first, then curves round
  • Holds the pencil with a gentle grip
• Rating: Confident / Trying / Needs support

Summative Assessment

End-of-Lesson Check (one child at a time, 3-4 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "e" on page 16. (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "e". (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (3 marks)

• Name each picture: eggplant, elephant, eagle (1 mark each)

Part C: Listen and Point (2 marks)

1. "Show me the elephant." (1 mark)
2. "Show me the eagle." (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (3 marks)

• Starts at the red dot (1 mark)
• Follows the dotted line (1 mark)
• Traces a full row with help or alone (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks
