Letter c

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "c". Learners look at a big picture of Ali waving from a purple car on a busy street, say the words cap and car, and meet three words that begin with "c": cap, cake and cow. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the letter "c" and decorate the cake picture. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 8
  • A real cap and a toy car
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of cap, car, cake, cow
  • A tablet with a drawing app
  • Building blocks

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Quickly revise "a" and "b": say /a/ for ant and /b/ for boy
  • Draw a big "c" in the air and ask learners to copy you
  • Say the sound /k/: a short click at the back of the throat, like a little cough: /k/, /k/, /k/

Little Explorers (5 minutes)

  • Hold up a real cap and a toy car
  • Name each one: "cap", "car"
  • Pass them round for every learner to hold
  • When a learner holds one, they say its name

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 8 and point to the big yellow "c"
  • Point to Ali's cap and say "cap". Learners repeat
  • Point to the purple car and say "car". Learners repeat
  • Read the speech bubble aloud: "Ali is wearing a cap in the car." Learners echo it
  • Ask a learner to put on the real cap while everyone says the sentence
  • Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat twice:
    • cap
    • cake
    • cow
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
  • Add actions: blow out candles for cake, moo for cow, tip a cap for cap

Little Innovators (5 minutes)

  • Open a drawing app on the tablet
  • Each learner clicks (taps) once and says /k/ for the sound it makes
  • Let learners hear that the click and the /k/ sound are alike

Little Thinkers (4 minutes)

  • Line three caps up on the table
  • Count them together: one cap, two caps, three caps
  • Take one away and count again

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Hold up the toy car: "What does car start with?" Learners say /k/
  • Wave goodbye like Ali waving from the car

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners hold the cap or car and point instead of speaking
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to say the whole sentence while wearing the cap

Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook pages 8-9
  • Building blocks
  • Crayons in bright colours, glitter, markers
  • Pencils

Warm-Up (4 minutes)

  • Show page 8 again. Point and say: cap, car, cake, cow
  • Say the sentence together: "Ali is wearing a cap in the car."
  • Chant the sound: "c, c, cap; c, c, car; c, c, cow"

Little Builders (5 minutes)

  • Give out building blocks
  • Let the learners build a car with four round wheels that turn
  • Count the wheels together: one, two, three, four
  • Ask: "What did you build?" Learners say "car"

Finger Tracing and Colouring (5 minutes)

  • Open page 9 and point to the big pink "c" in the cloud
  • Show the stroke: start at the top, curve round to the left like a big open mouth, and stop at the bottom
  • Let the learners run a finger along "c", then colour it in
  • Do the Colour, Say, Trace icons together: colour it, say "c", trace it

Trace and Write (9 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check the pinch grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Row 1: model the first "c", then follow the arrow on each dotted letter
  • Row 2: trace the dotted letters, starting at the red dot
  • Rows 3 and 4: learners try to make a "c" from each red dot, with your hand over their hand if needed
  • Remind learners that "c" stays open; it does not close into a circle
  • Praise every try: "What a lovely curve!"

Little Artists (6 minutes)

  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Decorate the cake on page 9 together
  • Use bright colours on every layer
  • Add glitter and marker dots on top
  • As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "cake"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw "c" in the air one last time and say /k/
  • Remind parents to finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick crayon; guide the learner's hand round the curve
  • Extension: Let confident learners find a "c" shape in the room, such as the curve of a cup handle or a half-circle block

  • Let the learners run a finger along "c", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
