Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 2
Letter b
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "b". Learners look at a big picture of a boy eating a banana on a sofa, say the words boy and banana, and meet three more words that begin with "b": basket, bee and bus. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the letter "b" and colour the banana picture. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)

- Learn simple words that begin with the letter "b"
- Trace the letter "b"

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Quickly revise "a": show the ant and apple and say /a/
- Draw a big "b" in the air and ask learners to copy you
- Say the sound /b/ with lips pressed together, then pop them open: /b/, /b/, /b/
Little Explorers (5 minutes)
- Blow a stream of bubbles across the room
- Let the learners chase and pop them
- Learners say /b/ at every pop
- Sit back down and say: "bubbles pop, /b/ /b/ /b/"

- Mime peeling and eating a banana while you all say it again
- Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- basket
- bee
- bus
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
- Add actions: buzz like a bee, turn a steering wheel for bus, hold a basket on your arm
Little Innovators (5 minutes)
- Play a short clip of things that begin with "b"
- The learners clap once each time a new one appears
- Pause and name any that are on page 6 (boy, banana, basket, bee, bus)
Little Thinkers (4 minutes)
- Tip out the book bags and count the books in each one
- Count aloud together: one, two, three...
- Say whose bag holds the most
- Ask: "Book starts with which sound?" Learners say /b/
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Hold up the banana picture: "What does banana start with?" Learners say /b/
- Pop one last bubble together: "/b/!"
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures and do the actions instead of saying words
- Extension: Ask confident learners to say the whole sentence on their own
Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 6-7
- Yellow playdough
- Crayons (yellow, brown)
- Pencils
- A simple drawing of the boy holding empty strings (see Little Artists note)
Warm-Up (4 minutes)
- Show page 6 again. Point and say: boy, banana, basket, bee, bus
- Say the sentence together: "The boy is eating a banana."
- Chant the sound: "b, b, boy; b, b, banana; b, b, bee"
Little Builders (5 minutes)
- Give out yellow playdough
- Let each learner roll a long snake
- Then curve the snake into a banana
- Ask: "What did you make?" Learners say "banana"
Finger Tracing and Colouring (5 minutes)
- Open page 7 and point to the big pink "b" in the cloud
- Show the stroke: start at the top, go straight down a tall line, go back up a little, then round to make a big tummy
- Let the learners run a finger along "b", then colour it in
- Do the Colour, Say, Trace icons together: colour it, say "b", trace it
- Colour the banana yellow
Trace and Write (9 minutes)
- Hand out pencils and check the pinch grip
- Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- Row 1: model the first "b", then follow the arrows: first the tall line down, then the round tummy
- Row 2: trace the dotted letters, starting at the red dot at the top
- Rows 3 and 4: learners try to make a "b" from each red dot, with your hand over their hand if needed
- Praise every try: "What a tall b!"
Little Artists (6 minutes)
- When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
- The book says the boy on the next page is holding empty strings. Page 7 shows a banana, so give learners a simple drawing of the boy holding empty strings
- Learners draw a balloon on the end of each string and colour them
- As they work, ask: "Who is this?" Learners say "boy"
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Draw "b" in the air one last time and say /b/
- Remind parents to finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; draw the tall line with the learner first, then the tummy
- Extension: Let confident learners make a "b" out of playdough: a long snake and a small circle
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- Let the learners run a finger along "b", then colour it in
- Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
- Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
