Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 4
Letter d
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "d". Learners look at a big picture of a duck and a dog on a garden path, say the words duck and dog, and meet three more words that begin with "d": dolphin, drum and doll. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the letter "d" and decorate the duck picture with paint dots. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)

- dolphin
- drum
- doll
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
- Add actions: swim like a dolphin, bang a drum, rock a doll
Little Innovators (5 minutes)
- Play a short clip of a dog and a duck
- The learners bark for one and quack for the other
- Pause and ask: "Is this the dog or the duck?"
Little Thinkers (4 minutes)
- Let each learner roll a dice
- Count the dots out loud together
- Say who rolled the biggest number
- Ask: "Dice starts with which sound?" Learners say /d/
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Bark and quack goodbye: "Woof! Quack! Bye-bye, dog and duck!"
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners bark or quack instead of saying the word
- Extension: Ask confident learners to say the whole sentence in one go
Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 10-11
- Grey playdough
- Cotton buds and yellow paint
- Crayons
- Pencils
Warm-Up (4 minutes)

Little Builders (5 minutes)

- Let each learner roll a dolphin: smooth back, pointed nose, one curved tail
- Ask: "What did you make?" Learners say "dolphin"
Finger Tracing and Colouring (5 minutes)
- Open page 11 and point to the big pink "d" in the cloud
- Show the stroke: make a small round "c" shape first and close it, then go up to the very top and draw a tall line straight down
- Let the learners run a finger along "d", then colour it in
- Do the Colour, Say, Trace icons together: colour it, say "d", trace it
Trace and Write (9 minutes)
- Hand out pencils and check the pinch grip
- Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- Row 1: model the first "d", then follow the arrows: the round part first, then the tall line down
- Row 2: trace the dotted letters, starting at the red dot
- Rows 3 and 4: learners try to make a "d" from each red dot, with your hand over their hand if needed
- Remind learners: "d" has its round part first, then the tall line; "b" has the tall line first
- Praise every try: "Super d!"
Little Artists (6 minutes)
- When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
- Dip a cotton bud in paint and press dots onto the duck on page 11
- Use yellow paint so the duck turns yellow like the duck on page 10
- As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "duck"
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Draw "d" in the air one last time and say /d/
- Remind parents to finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon; trace the round part with the learner, then let them do the line
- Extension: Let confident learners play a "b or d?" game with letter cards
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- Let the learners run a finger along "d", then colour it in
- Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
- Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
