Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 1
Letter a
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "a". Learners look at a big picture of an ant sitting on an apple, say the words ant and apple, and meet three more words that begin with "a": alligator, apricot and anchor. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the letter "a" and colour the apple picture. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)

- alligator
- apricot
- anchor
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Little Innovators (5 minutes)
- Play a short clip of an apple tree through the year
- Pause at each stage and name it together: blossom first, then a tiny green fruit, then one ripe red apple
- Ask: "Is the apple big or small now?"
Little Builders (4 minutes)
- Give out building blocks
- See who can make an alligator with a long snapping jaw
- Learners open and close their arms like a snapping jaw and say "alligator"
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Hold up the apple and ask: "What does apple start with?" Learners say /a/
- Wave goodbye to the ant: "Bye-bye, ant!"
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 4-5
- Crayons (red, green, brown)
- Pencils
- Red paper, glue sticks
Warm-Up (5 minutes)

- Sing the /a/ sound: "a, a, apple; a, a, ant"
Little Thinkers (4 minutes)
- Ask: "How many 'a's can you count in each word?"
- Write each word large on the board and point to each "a" as learners count
aloud:
- apple (one)
- ant (one)
- alligator (two)
- Learners only count and point; they do not read the word
Finger Tracing and Colouring (6 minutes)
- Open page 5 and point to the big pink "a" in the cloud
- Show the stroke: start at the top, curve round to the left like a ball, come back up to the top, then go straight down
- Let the learners run a finger along "a", then colour it in
- Do the Colour, Say, Trace icons together: colour it, say "a", trace it
Trace and Write (8 minutes)
- Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
- Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- Row 1: model the first "a", then follow the arrow on each dotted letter
- Row 2: trace the dotted letters, starting at the red dot
- Rows 3 and 4: learners try to make an "a" from each red dot, with your hand over their hand if needed
- Praise every try: "Lovely round a!"
Little Artists (6 minutes)
- When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
- Tear red paper into small pieces with the learners
- Paste the pieces inside the apple outline on page 5
- Colour the leaf green and the stalk brown
- As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "apple"
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Draw "a" in the air one last time and say /a/
- Remind parents to finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
- Extension: Let confident learners trace a big "a" on the board with a marker
Teaching Tips (from textbook)

- Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
