Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "b" when asked
2. Say the sound /b/
3. Name the pictures on page 6: boy, banana, basket, bee, bus
4. Repeat the sentence "The boy is eating a banana."
5. Trace the letter "b" starting at the top

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Bubble Pop Sound (During Day 1)

• Task: While popping bubbles, listen to each learner say /b/
• Criteria: Says /b/ with a clear lip pop
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (a, b, d). Ask: "Where is b?" The learner points to it
• Criteria:
  • Points to "b" without help
  • Does not mix up "b" and "d"
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. boy
  2. banana
  3. basket
  4. bee
  5. bus
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 5 pictures
• Rating: 5 names / 3-4 names / 0-2 names

4. Sentence Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: Say "The boy is eating a banana." The learner repeats it
• Criteria: Repeats most of the sentence
• Rating: Whole sentence / Part of sentence / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace rows 1 and 2 on page 7
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the top with the tall line
  • Makes the round tummy on the right side
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "b" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "b" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (5 marks)

• Show the five pictures from page 6. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • boy, banana, basket, bee, bus

Part C: Sentence (1 mark)

• Learner repeats "The boy is eating a banana." (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner traces two dotted "b" letters, starting at the red dot (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks
