Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "x" when it is named
2. Say the letter name "x" and the sound /ks/ heard at the end of "box"
3. Say the words x-ray and xylophone when shown the pictures
4. Repeat the words xerus and Xebec after the teacher
5. Repeat the speech-bubble sentence with help
6. Trace the letter "x" with two slanting lines

All assessment is by observation and talk. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show the big "x" on page 66 next to two letters learnt earlier. Ask: "Where is x?"
• Criteria:
  • Points to "x" without help
  • Makes an "x" with crossed arms
• Rating: Yes, confidently / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1 and Day 2)

• Task: Say "box" and ask: "What sound do you hear at the end?"
• Criteria: Says /ks/
• Rating: Yes, confidently / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Hold up the picture cards: x-ray, xylophone, xerus, Xebec
• Criteria:
  • Names x-ray and xylophone
  • Repeats xerus and Xebec after the teacher
• Rating: All four / Two or three / Needs support

4. Speech-Bubble Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: Say "Ahmed is playing the xylophone and watching the x-ray." in two parts. The learner repeats each part.
• Criteria: Repeats both parts clearly
• Rating: Both parts / One part / Needs support

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace the dotted "x" rows on page 67
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot
  • Makes two crossing slanted lines
  • Stays close to the dotted line
• Rating: Neat and accurate / Trying well / Needs more practice

Summative Assessment

One-to-One Check (about 3 minutes per learner)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to "x" among three letters. (1 mark)
2. Say the letter name "x". (1 mark)
3. Say "box" and say the /ks/ sound at the end. (1 mark)

Part B: Words (4 marks)

• Show the pictures and ask "What is this?" (1 mark each; repeating after the teacher counts for xerus and Xebec)
  • x-ray
  • xylophone
  • xerus
  • Xebec

Part C: Colours and Counting (1 mark)

• Point to the xylophone on page 67 and count the bars together. (1 mark for joining in)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Trace three dotted "x" letters. (1 mark for starting at the dot, 1 mark for two crossing lines)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Make an "x" with crossed arms or two pencils each day
  • Finger-trace a large "x" on a card or in a sand tray
  • Say "box" with the teacher and stretch out the /ks/
  • Look at the x-ray and xylophone pictures and say the words together
