Assessment Plan -- Lesson 25

Letter y

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Point to the letter "y" when it is named
  2. Say the sound /y/
  3. Say the words yak, yo-yo, yolk, yam and yacht when shown the pictures
  4. Repeat the speech-bubble sentence with help
  5. Count the yak's two horns
  6. Trace the letter "y", taking the tail below the line

All assessment is by observation and talk. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

  • Task: Show a "y" card next to two letters learnt earlier. Ask: "Where is y?"
  • Criteria: Points to "y" without help
  • Rating: Yes, confidently / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

  • Task: Ask each learner: "What sound does y make?"
  • Criteria:
    • Says /y/ as in "yes"
    • Does not only say the letter name
  • Rating: Yes, confidently / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1 and Day 2)

  • Task: Hold up the five picture cards one at a time: yak, yo-yo, yolk, yam, yacht
  • Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 5 pictures
  • Rating: 4-5 named / 2-3 named / 0-1 named

4. Speech-Bubble Echo (During Day 1)

  • Task: Say "The yak is playing with a yo-yo." in two parts. The learner repeats each part.
  • Criteria: Repeats both parts clearly with a clear /y/ in "yak" and "yo-yo"
  • Rating: Both parts / One part / Needs support

5. Counting Horns (During Day 2)

  • Task: Point to the yak on page 70 and ask: "How many horns?"
  • Criteria:
    • Counts two horns
    • Joins in counting four horns for two yaks
  • Rating: Yes, confidently / With help / Not yet

6. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

  • Task: Watch the learner trace the dotted "y" rows on page 71
  • Criteria:
    • Starts at the red dot
    • Makes the cup shape, then the long line down
    • Takes the tail below the line
  • Rating: Neat and accurate / Trying well / Needs more practice

Summative Assessment

One-to-One Check (about 3 minutes per learner)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

  1. Point to "y" among three letters. (1 mark)
  2. Say the letter name "y". (1 mark)
  3. Say the sound /y/. (1 mark)

Part B: Words (5 marks)

  • Show the pictures and ask "What is this?" (1 mark each)
    • yak
    • yo-yo
    • yolk
    • yam
    • yacht

Part C: Tracing (2 marks)

  • Trace three dotted "y" letters. (1 mark for starting at the dot, 1 mark for the tail below the line)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

  • Learners who score below 5/10 should:
    • Say "yes" and "/y/" together at circle time each day
    • Finger-trace a large "y" on a card or in a sand tray, saying "down, round, up; long line down"
    • Play with a yo-yo (real or playdough) while saying "yo-yo"
    • Look at the yak and yacht pictures with the teacher and say the words together
