Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "w" when it is named
2. Say the sound /w/
3. Say the words well, watermelon, window and whale when shown the pictures
4. Repeat the speech-bubble sentence with help
5. Trace the letter "w" starting at the red dot
6. Hold a pencil or crayon with a beginning grip

All assessment is by observation and talk. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show the big "w" on page 64 next to two letters learnt earlier. Ask: "Where is w?"
• Criteria:
  • Points to "w" without help
  • Says "w" when you point to it
• Rating: Yes, confidently / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Ask each learner: "What sound does w make?"
• Criteria:
  • Rounds lips and says /w/
  • Does not say the letter name only
• Rating: Yes, confidently / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1 and Day 2)

• Task: Hold up the four picture cards one at a time: well, watermelon, window, whale
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 named / 2-3 named / 0-1 named

4. Speech-Bubble Echo (During Day 2)

• Task: Say "The girl is sitting near the well and watermelons." in two parts. The learner repeats each part.
• Criteria:
  • Repeats both parts clearly
  • Says "well" and "watermelons" with a clear /w/
• Rating: Both parts / One part / Needs support

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace the dotted "w" rows on page 65
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot
  • Makes the down, up, down, up movement
  • Stays close to the dotted line
• Rating: Neat and accurate / Trying well / Needs more practice

Summative Assessment

One-to-One Check (about 3 minutes per learner)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to "w" among three letters. (1 mark)
2. Say the letter name "w". (1 mark)
3. Say the sound /w/. (1 mark)

Part B: Words (4 marks)

• Show the pictures and ask "What is this?" (1 mark each)
  • well
  • watermelon
  • window
  • whale

Part C: Listening (1 mark)

• Say two words: "whale" and a word from an earlier letter. Ask: "Which one starts with /w/?" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Trace three dotted "w" letters. (1 mark for starting at the dot, 1 mark for the down-up-down-up shape)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Practise the wave action with /w/ at circle time each day
  • Finger-trace a large "w" on a card or in a sand tray
  • Look at the whale and watermelon pictures with the teacher and say the words together
• Share the four words with parents so they can say them at home
