Letter x

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "x". Learners look at a big picture of Ahmed in a children's clinic, playing a xylophone while a doctor shows him an x-ray. They say the words x-ray and xylophone and meet two more "x" words: xerus (a small ground squirrel) and Xebec (an old sailing ship). The book's activities teach the /ks/ sound that "x" makes at the end of the word box. On the second day learners trace the letter "x" and colour the xylophone. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

  • An old X-ray film (ask a local clinic, or print a clear X-ray picture)
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of x-ray, xylophone, xerus, Xebec
  • A toy xylophone if available
  • A tablet or screen with a short clip of an X-ray machine at work

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Cross your arms over your chest to make an "x". Learners copy you
  • Say the letter name "x" (ex) together three times
  • Say "box" slowly and stretch the end: "bo-/ks/". Learners copy the /ks/ sound

Little Explorers (5 minutes)

  • Hold an X-ray film up to the window so light shines through it
  • Tell the learners a doctor uses one to see inside the body
  • Let learners look and point to the bones they can see
  • Say together: "x-ray, x-ray"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 66 and point to the big yellow "x"
  • Point to the x-ray screen and say "x-ray". Learners repeat
  • Point to the xylophone and say "xylophone". Learners repeat, clapping the parts: xy-lo-phone
  • Read the speech bubble aloud: "Ahmed is playing the xylophone and watching the x-ray." Learners echo it in two parts:
    • "Ahmed is playing the xylophone"
    • "and watching the x-ray"
  • Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat twice:
    • xerus -- "a xerus is a small animal, like a squirrel"
    • Xebec -- "a Xebec is an old sailing ship"
    • xylophone
  • Ask simple pointing questions:
    • "Where is Ahmed?"
    • "Where is the doctor?"
    • "Can you find the x-ray?"

Little Innovators (5 minutes)

  • Play a short clip of an X-ray machine at work
  • The learners say /ks/ each time a picture appears
  • Pause the clip after each picture so learners have time to say it

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up the picture cards one by one and let learners call out the word
  • Cross arms to make an "x" and say "x, /ks/, box"
  • Sing a goodbye song

Differentiation

  • Support: Let a learner point to the picture while you say the word, then say it together
  • Extension: Ask a confident learner to find the "x" on the x-ray machine sign in the big picture

Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook pages 66-67
  • Pencils and crayons in many colours
  • Playdough
  • A toy xylophone or the xylophone picture

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the picture cards again: x-ray, xylophone, xerus, Xebec. Learners say each word
  • Say the speech-bubble sentence together
  • Play "Arms Up for X": learners cross arms into an "x" every time you say the letter name

Little Builders (5 minutes)

  • Help learners build a box from four flat playdough walls and one base
  • Say "box" together, and listen for /ks/ at the end
  • Let each learner say "box" as they show their model

Little Thinkers (5 minutes)

  • Count the bars on the xylophone together, pointing to each bar
  • Then say "box" together, and listen for the /ks/ at the end

Letter Feel and Colour (3 minutes)

  • Open page 67 and point to the big pink "x"
  • Let the learners run a finger along "x": one slanting line from top left to bottom right, then one slanting line from top right to bottom left
  • Then let learners colour the big "x" in

Trace and Write (8 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check each learner's grip
  • Point to the solid black "x" at the start of the first row. Draw it in the air together
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time:
    • Row 1: trace the dotted "x" letters, starting at the red dot
    • Row 2: trace the dotted "x" letters, starting at the red dot
    • Rows 3 and 4: only red dots are shown. Help learners start at each dot and try an "x" on their own
  • Chant "slide down, lift, slide down" for each letter
  • Guide hands gently where needed; praise every try

Little Artists (4 minutes)

  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity: colour the xylophone on page 67
  • Give every bar a different colour, working from left to right
  • Say "xylophone" together when learners finish

Wrap-Up

  • Learners hold up their pages and say "x, /ks/, box"
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

  • Support: Hold the learner's hand lightly and trace one "x" together before they try alone
  • Extension: Let a confident learner make an "x" from two playdough ropes
