Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "v" when the teacher says its name
2. Say the sound /v/
3. Name the pictures van, valley, vacuum, violin and vase
4. Repeat the sentence "The blue van is in the beautiful valley." with the teacher
5. Trace the letter "v" starting at the red dot

All assessment is done by watching and listening. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter and Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Hold up the "v" card among two other letter cards. Ask: "Where is v?" Then ask: "What sound does v make?"
• Criteria:
  • Points to "v" correctly
  • Says a buzzing /v/ (not /w/ or /f/)
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

2. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Show the pictures from page 62 one at a time: van, valley, vacuum, violin, vase
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 5 pictures
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

3. Listen and Repeat (During Day 1)

• Task: Learner repeats the speech-bubble sentence in short parts after the teacher
• Criteria:
  • Repeats "The blue van" and "the beautiful valley"
  • Can answer "Where is the van?" (in the valley)
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

4. First, Last and Count (During Day 3)

• Task: Little Thinkers activity with five toy vans
• Criteria: Points to the first van and the last van; counts to five with the group
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Learner traces the dotted "v" letters on page 63
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot on the left
  • Goes down, then up to the right
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

Do this one learner at a time. Keep it short and friendly.

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

• Trace two "v" letters from the red dot:
  • Slides down to the point (1 mark)
  • Slides up to the right (1 mark)

Remediation Plan

  • Practise the /v/ buzz with a finger on the lips every day
  • Play "drive the van" with the picture cards, stopping to name each one
  • Make a "v" with two fingers, two sticks or two playdough rolls
  • Repeat the tracing rows on page 63 with hand-over-hand help
