Hello, little friends! Welcome back. Today we are going to meet a very special letter. It is the letter q!

Look at the letter q. It has a round ball, and a long tail going down with a little flick at the end. Can you say its name with me? q. Very good!

Now let us learn the sound that q makes. The letter q says /kw/. Say it quickly. /kw/, /kw/, /kw/. It sounds a little like a duck saying quack! Well done!

Let us say it together again. q says /kw/. Wonderful!

Now let us look at a beautiful picture. We are in a lovely palace garden with pink roses. Who is sitting on the bench? She is wearing a shiny crown. It is a queen! Say it with me. Queen. Kw-queen. Queen starts with the /kw/ sound.

Look next to the queen. There is a little brown bird with a curly feather on its head. It is a quail! Say it with me. Quail. Kw-quail. Quail starts with /kw/ too.

Let us listen to what the picture says. The pretty queen has a quail in the garden. Can you say it with me? The pretty queen has a quail in the garden. Well done!

Let us play. Put a pretend crown on your head. You are the queen! Now take tiny, quick steps like a little quail. Hop, hop, hop!

Here is a quiver. A quiver is a long bag that holds arrows. Say quiver. Kw-quiver. Quiver starts with /kw/.

And here is a boy with lots of question marks over his head. He is thinking hard. He has a question! Put your finger on your chin and think. Say question. Kw-question. Question starts with /kw/.

Let us say all our q words together. Queen. Quail. Quiver. Question. Great job!

Now let us learn how to write the letter q. Hold up your pointing finger. We are going to draw q in the air.

Start at the top. Curve round to the left, down and round, and back up to the top, like a little ball. Now go straight down, all the way down, past the line. Give it a little flick at the end. That is q!

Let us do it again, nice and slowly. Start at the top. Round the ball. Back up. Straight down. Flick! Beautiful!

Can you draw q on your hand? Round the ball, up, down, and flick. You are so clever!

In your book, you will see little red dots. Always start your q at the red dot. Remember, the tail of q goes down below the line.

Here is a little secret. The letter p and the letter q look a bit alike. But p has its round tummy on the right side, and q has its round ball on the left side.
