Revision Objectives

• Remember the letter name "q" and the sound /kw/
• Say the page words again: queen, quail, quiver, question
• Repeat the sentence: "The pretty queen has a quail in the garden"
• Practise the "q" stroke: round the ball, up, down, flick
• Tell "q" apart from "p"

Revision Activity 1: Quail Steps

Time: 5 minutes

• Children walk round the room with tiny, quick quail steps
• Every time the teacher claps, they stop and say "/kw/"
• Finish with everyone saying: "q says /kw/!"

Revision Activity 2: The Queen Says

Time: 5 minutes

• The teacher wears the paper crown and is the queen
• "The queen says: say quail!" Children repeat: "quail!"
• "The queen says: say quiver!" Children repeat: "quiver!"
• Continue with queen and question
• Let a child take a turn as the queen

Revision Activity 3: Picture Hunt

Time: 5 minutes

• Place the picture cards around the room: queen, quail, quiver, question
• Say a word; children walk to the correct card and touch it
• Then hold up a card and children say the word together
• For "question", children put a finger on their chin and look puzzled

Revision Activity 4: Say the Sentence

Time: 5 minutes

• Say the sentence in two parts: "The pretty queen has a quail / in the garden."
• Children echo each part
• Act it out: a queen sits on a chair, and a quail hops beside her
• Change actors and repeat

Revision Activity 5: p or q?

Time: 5 minutes

• Hold up a big "p" card and a big "q" card
• Say: "p has its round tummy on the right. q has its round ball on the left."
• Hold up one card at a time. Children say "p, /p/" or "q, /kw/"
• Keep it slow and give lots of help

Revision Activity 6: Tracing Practice

Time: 10 minutes

• Children draw a giant "q" in the air
• Say the stroke together: "Start at the top. Round to the left, back up. Straight down past the line. Flick!"
• Give each child a sheet with three large dotted "q" letters and a red start dot
• Children trace with a crayon. Accept every attempt with praise
• Children who finish can colour the quail on page 49
