Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, children should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "h" when it is shown or named
2. Say the sound /h/
3. Name the pictures horse, hen, hill and hut
4. Repeat the sentence "A cute horse and a little hen are eating their yummy food"
5. Trace the letter "h" starting at the red dot

All assessment is done by watching and listening. Children are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (h, n, b). Ask: "Where is h?"
• Criteria: Child points to "h" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Hold up the "h" card. Ask: "What does h say?"
• Criteria: Child says a soft breathy /h/ (not "huh")
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 2)

• Task: Show the pictures horse, hen, hill and hut one at a time. Ask: "What is this?"
• Criteria: Child names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 named / 3 named / Needs practice

4. Sentence Repeat (During Day 2)

• Task: Say the sentence in three short parts. Child repeats each part.
• Criteria: Child says "cute horse" and "little hen"
• Rating: Yes / Part of it / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 3)

• Task: Child traces "h" on page 23
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot at the top
  • Makes the tall line first
  • Goes back up and makes the hump
• Rating: Confident / Trying / Needs support

Summative Assessment

End-of-Lesson Check (one child at a time, 3-4 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "h" on page 22. (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "h". (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Name each picture: horse, hen, hill, hut (1 mark each)

Part C: Listen and Point (2 marks)

1. "Show me the hen." (1 mark)
2. "Show me the hut." (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (3 marks)

• Starts at the red dot (1 mark)
• Makes the tall line down (1 mark)
• Makes the hump (1 mark)

Total: 11 marks
