Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "d" when asked
2. Say the sound /d/
3. Name the pictures on page 10: duck, dog, dolphin, drum, doll
4. Repeat the sentence "The dog and the duck are playing in the garden."
5. Trace the letter "d" with the round part first and the tall line second

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Bark or Quack (During Day 1)

• Task: Show the dog, then the duck. The learner barks or quacks and says the word
• Criteria: Makes the right sound and says "dog" or "duck"
• Rating: Both / One / Not yet

2. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (b, c, d). Ask: "Where is d?" The learner points to it
• Criteria:
  • Points to "d" without help
  • Does not mix up "d" and "b"
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. duck
  2. dog
  3. dolphin
  4. drum
  5. doll
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 5 pictures
• Rating: 5 names / 3-4 names / 0-2 names

4. Sentence Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: Say "The dog and the duck are playing in the garden." The learner repeats it
• Criteria: Repeats most of the sentence
• Rating: Whole sentence / Part of sentence / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace rows 1 and 2 on page 11
• Criteria:
  • Makes the round part first
  • Draws the tall line from the top down
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "d" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "d" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (5 marks)

• Show the five pictures from page 10. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • duck, dog, dolphin, drum, doll

Part C: Sentence (1 mark)

• Learner repeats "The dog and the duck are playing in the garden." (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner traces two dotted "d" letters, starting at the red dot (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks
