Different Professions
Subject: English | Class: 1 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)
Overview
This unit features a passage about different professions (farmer, cobbler, doctor, teacher, dress designer). Students learn about consonant blends, gender of naming words (masculine/feminine), vocabulary (repair, treat, provide), classroom commands, and creative writing about their morning routine.
Learning Objectives
- Use pre-reading strategies to predict the story by looking at pictures
- Interact with the text and use reading strategies to guess what follows
- Respond to text through pantomime
- Recognise consonants and vowels; use common consonant blends (/fl/, /sk/, /st/)
- Recognise formulaic expressions to listen and respond to commands

Day 1: Reading (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 53-54, profession flashcards (farmer, cobbler, doctor, teacher, dress designer)
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Show pictures of different professionals
- Ask: "Who are these people shown in the pictures?"
- Discuss: "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the passage aloud:
- "We live together. We can not do all jobs. Different people do different jobs. We need each other."
- "Farmers grow crops. They provide us food, vegetables and fruits."
- "Cobblers make and repair our shoes. They work honestly."
- "Doctors work in hospitals. They treat the sick people. They give medicine to them."
- "Teachers teach students with love and care. They help them in their study."
- "Dress designers make beautiful dresses for men, women and children."
- Ask while-reading question: "Who treats sick people?" (Doctors)
- Ask post-reading question: "What do you want to be when grown up?"
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Students share what profession they want to follow and why
- Emphasise that all professions are important and we need each other
Differentiation
- Support: Focus on 3 professions; use pictures to reinforce
- Extension: Students name additional professions not in the text
Day 2: Comprehension, Professions Matching & Vocabulary (40 minutes)

- Textbook pages 55-56, matching cards, vocabulary list
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Quick review: "What does a doctor do?"
Main Activity -- Comprehension (10 minutes)
- Answer comprehension questions:
- What does a doctor do? (Works in hospitals, treats sick people, gives medicine)
- How do farmers help us? (They grow crops, provide food, vegetables, and fruits)
- What is the duty of a teacher? (Teaches students with love and care, helps in study)
- Fill in the blanks with correct options:
- Farmers provide us ___ (crops)
- ___ give us medicine. (Doctors)
- Dress designers make beautiful ___ (dresses)
Main Activity -- Match Professions (10 minutes)
- Match pictures of people with their profession names: teacher, cobbler, doctor, farmer
Main Activity -- Vocabulary and Dialogue (10 minutes)
- Teach vocabulary:
- repair = mend
- treat = to deal
- provide = to supply
- Practise the classroom dialogue:
- Student: "Good morning teacher!"
- Teacher: "Good morning!"
- Student: "Yes, teacher."
- Teacher: "Sit down and open your English book."

- Review profession vocabulary
Day 3: Consonant Blends, Gender & Creative Writing (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 56-57, blend word cards, writing notebooks
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Quick review of professions and vocabulary
Main Activity -- Consonant Blends (10 minutes)
- Consonant blends are two consonants together where both sounds are heard
- Examples: /fl/ in flag, floor; /sk/ in skip, sky; /st/ in star, stop
- Identify initial blends in words: flag, skip, star, frog, tree
- Identify final blends: mask, hand, help, jump
Main Activity -- Gender of Nouns (10 minutes)
- Masculine nouns: boy, father, brother, king, uncle
- Feminine nouns: girl, mother, sister, queen, aunt
- Match masculine with feminine:
- boy / girl
- father / mother
- brother / sister
- king / queen
- uncle / aunt
Main Activity -- Creative Writing (15 minutes)
- Colour sketches and write a simple sentence about each picture
- Write at least four sentences about your morning routine using the word bank: get up, brush, wash, bath, exercise
- Students write sentences in their notebooks:
- "I get up early in the morning."
- "I brush my teeth."
- "I wash my face."
- "I take a bath."
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Recap: professions, consonant blends, gender, morning routine writing
