Family Chores

Overview
This unit features a passage about a girl named Hania describing how her family shares household chores. Students learn about words with the same beginning and ending sounds, possessive pronouns, alphabetical order, and fill-in-the-blank creative writing.

Day 1: Reading (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 48-49, pictures of household chores, chart paper
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Ask: "Do you help your parents at home?"
- Show pictures of chores: sweeping, washing dishes, watering plants, making bed
- Discuss which chores students do at home
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the passage aloud:
- "My name is Hania. I live with my family in a big house. We are two sisters and one brother. We share many chores with our parents."
- "My brother and I take the garbage out. We also wash our father's motorcycle twice a week. Every Friday, I weed the garden and my brother waters the plants. I also make my bed in the morning."
- "My mother sweeps the kitchen. She also washes the dishes daily."
- "My father mops the drawing room floor. He also cuts the grass with lawnmower."
- "My brother, Hashir, vacuums the rugs in the living room. He also empties the trash."
- "After we finish the chores, we have dinner together and watch a cartoon or drama on TV. At dinner we reward ourselves with a big piece of chocolate cake for all our work at home."
- "We are so exhausted daily that after dinner we just crash out."
- Ask pre-reading question: "Who cuts the grass with lawnmower?"
- Ask post-reading questions: "Do you help your parents in household chores?" and "What is your favourite household chore?"
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Students share what chores they do at home
- Discuss why doing chores is important (responsibility, teamwork)
Differentiation
- Support: Use picture prompts to help students recall the chores from the story
- Extension: Students write 2 sentences about chores they do at home
Day 2: Comprehension, Same Sounds & Possessive Pronouns (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 50-51, word cards, picture cards
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Quick review: "What is Hania's brother's name?" (Hashir)
Main Activity -- Comprehension (10 minutes)
- Answer comprehension questions:
- Who cleans the house every day? (Mother sweeps the kitchen)
- Who washes the dishes daily? (Mother)
- Who vacuums the rugs in the living room? (Hashir)
- Do you know how to empty the trash?
- What do you do after finishing your household chores?
Main Activity -- Same Beginning and Ending Sounds (15 minutes)
- Same initial (beginning) sound: boy, bag, bus, box, bell -- all start with /b/
- Same ending sound: cat, rat, mat, bat, fat -- all end with /t/
- Exercise: Write the beginning and ending sound for each picture:
- lion (/l/), lamb (/l/), log (/l/), lock (/l/) -- same beginning
- fan (/n/), ban (/n/), ran (/n/), han (/n/) -- same ending
Main Activity -- Possessive Pronouns (10 minutes)
- A possessive pronoun indicates possession or ownership
- Examples: Your cat is adorable, but not as cute as ours. My washing machine does not work, can I borrow yours?
- Key possessive pronouns: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs
- Exercise: Fill in the blanks:
- I have a new book. It is ___.
- She has a cat. It is ___.
- We have new shoes. They are ___.

Day 3: Alphabetical Order, Writing & Oral Communication (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 51-52, word cards, writing notebooks
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Quick review of beginning and ending sounds
Main Activity -- Alphabetical Order (10 minutes)
- Explain: to put words in alphabetical order, look at the first letter
- Example: sun, apple, cat, zoo, umbrella becomes apple, cat, sun, umbrella, zoo
- Exercise: Arrange words in alphabetical order: fish, goat, table, wood, potato
Main Activity -- Creative Writing (15 minutes)
- Fill in the blanks using the word bank: bloom, long, morning, boat, bird
- Days are ___ in winters.
- A crow is a ___.
- Flowers ___ in spring.
- It is ___.
- Life is like a ___.
- Students write the completed sentences in their notebooks
Oral Communication (5 minutes)
- Practise the dialogue:
- Student: "Assalaamu Alaikum, Teacher."
- Teacher: "Wa Alaikum Assalaam!"
- Student: "Can I ride the see saw, please?"
- Teacher: "Yes, why not. Stand in queue and wait for your turn."
- Student: "Thanks, teacher."
