Hello, little friends! Welcome back. Today we are going to meet a new letter. It is the letter y.

Look at the letter y. It has a little cup at the top and a long tail that hangs down. Can you say its name with me? y. Great!

The letter y makes a sound. It is the sound at the start of yes. Smile wide and say /y/. /y/, /y/, /y/. Now say yes! Yes! Well done!

Now let us look at a big, happy picture. We are in a village high up in the mountains. There are colourful flags flying in the sky.

Look at this big furry animal. It has two curly horns and a friendly face. It is a yak! Say it with me: yak. /y/, /y/, yak.

The yak is holding a string. On the string is a round red toy that goes down and up, down and up. It is a yo-yo! Say it with me: yo-yo.

Let us listen to what the picture says. The yak is playing with a yo-yo.

Say it with me. The yak is playing with a yo-yo. Wonderful!

Now let us look at three more pictures. Every one of them begins with y.

Here is a yolk. When we crack an egg, the yolk is the round yellow part in the middle. Yolk.

Here is a yam. A yam is a vegetable. It grows under the ground. It is orange inside. Yam.

Here is a yacht. A yacht is a boat with colourful sails. It sails on the blue water. Yacht.

Let us say them all together. Yolk. Yam. Yacht. Very good!

Can you hear the /y/ at the start of each word? /y/, yolk. /y/, yam. /y/, yacht.

Let us play a game. When you hear a y word, shout yes!

Yak. Yes! Yo-yo. Yes! Yolk. Yes! Yam. Yes! Yacht. Yes! You are such good listeners.

Let us count the yak's horns. Point to them. One, two. The yak has two horns. If there were two yaks, how many horns would there be? One, two, three, four. Four horns!

Now it is time to write the letter y. First, let us draw it in the air with our finger.

Put your finger up at the top. Go down, curve round at the bottom, and go back up to the top. That makes a little cup.

Now, from the top on the right side, pull a long line straight down. Go past the line, all the way down, and give it a little curl at the end. That is the tail.

That is the letter y! Let us do it again. Down, round, up. Long line down. Brilliant!

When you trace y in your book, start at the little red dot. Hold your pencil gently, like a little bird's beak pinching it. Remember, the tail of y hangs down below the line.

Take your time. Follow the dots. If you go off the line, that is okay. Just try again.

After you trace, you can colour the yacht picture. Choose bright colours for the sails and the boat.
