Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "u" when the teacher says its name
2. Say the short sound /u/ as in "umbrella"
3. Name the pictures umbrella, umpire, unicorn, uniform and utensils
4. Repeat the sentence "The umpire is holding an umbrella in the rain." with the teacher
5. Trace the letter "u" starting at the red dot

All assessment is done by watching and listening. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter and Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Hold up the "u" card among two other letter cards. Ask: "Where is u?" Then ask: "What sound does u make?"
• Criteria:
  • Points to "u" correctly
  • Says the short /u/ sound as in "umbrella"
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

2. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Show the pictures from page 60 one at a time: umbrella, umpire, unicorn, uniform, utensils
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 5 pictures (umpire and utensils are new words for many learners)
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

3. Listen and Repeat (During Day 1)

• Task: Learner repeats the speech-bubble sentence in short parts after the teacher
• Criteria:
  • Repeats "The umpire" and "an umbrella in the rain"
  • Can answer "What is the umpire holding?" (an umbrella)
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

4. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Learner traces the dotted "u" letters on page 61
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot
  • Goes down, round, up and down again
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

Do this one learner at a time. Keep it short and friendly.

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "u". (1 mark)
2. Say the sound "u" makes. (1 mark)

Part B: Words (5 marks)

• Show each picture and ask "What is this?"
  • umbrella (1 mark)
  • umpire (1 mark)
  • unicorn (1 mark)
  • uniform (1 mark)
  • utensils (1 mark)

Part C: Listening (2 marks)

1. "What is the umpire holding?" (1 mark)
2. "Is it sunny or rainy?" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (3 marks)

• Trace two "u" letters from the red dot:
  • Starts at the dot (1 mark)
  • Makes the round cup shape at the bottom (1 mark)
  • Finishes with the line down on the right (1 mark)

Total: 12 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 6/12 should:
  • Stand under a real umbrella with the teacher and say "umbrella, /u/" several times
  • Use the picture cards daily for a quick "What is this?" game
  • Trace a large "u" in sand or with a wet finger on the board
  • Repeat the tracing rows on page 61 with hand-over-hand help
