Letter u

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "u" and its short sound /u/ (as in "umbrella"). Learners meet an umpire holding an umbrella in the rain, say the words umbrella, umpire, unicorn, uniform and utensils, listen to a simple sentence, and trace the letter "u" with a finger and then a pencil. All work is oral, playful and hands-on. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Teacher tip: umbrella and umpire begin with the short /u/ sound ("uh"). Unicorn, uniform and utensils begin with the letter "u" but say the letter's name ("you"). Use umbrella and umpire to teach the sound, and simply say that unicorn, uniform and utensils also start with the letter "u".

Learning Objectives

  • Trace the letter "u" with a finger and a pencil

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 60, a large letter "u" card, a real umbrella, picture cards of an umbrella, umpire, unicorn, uniform and utensils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle
  • Pretend to lift something heavy and say "u, u, u" (short "uh") with each lift
  • Learners copy the action and the sound
  • Say: "Today our letter says /u/. Its name is u."

Main Activity -- Meet the Letter (10 minutes)

  • Hold up the big "u" card. Say: "This is u. u says /u/."
  • Learners repeat: big voice, small voice, whisper voice
  • Open page 60. Point to the big red "u" at the top of the page
  • Point to the umbrella. Say: "Umbrella. /u/ /u/ umbrella." Learners hold an imaginary umbrella over their heads
  • Point to the umpire. Say: "Umpire. /u/ /u/ umpire." Explain: "An umpire is the person who looks after a game."
  • Point to each picture card at the bottom of the page:
    • unicorn -- learners say "unicorn" and put one finger on their forehead like a horn
    • uniform -- learners say "uniform" and touch their school clothes
    • utensils -- learners say "utensils" and pretend to stir a pot

Main Activity -- The Speech Bubble (5 minutes)

  • Point to the speech bubble and say slowly: "The umpire is holding an umbrella in the rain."
  • Say it in small parts; learners echo each part:
    • "The umpire"
    • "is holding an umbrella"
    • "in the rain"
  • Ask: "What is the umpire holding?" (an umbrella) "Is it sunny or rainy?" (rainy)
  • Learners make rain with their fingers, then hold up their "umbrellas"

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Play "Umbrella Up": when the teacher says a word from the page, learners hold their umbrellas up
  • Ask: "What sound does u make?" Learners answer "/u/"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let learners say the words with the whole group before trying alone
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to say all five words from the page in a row

Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 61, crayons, pencils, a large "u" drawn on the board

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 60 and ask learners to name the pictures
  • Say "/u/" while opening and closing an imaginary umbrella

Main Activity -- Finger Tracing (8 minutes)

  • Follow the Teacher's Note: let the learners run a finger along the big pink "u" on page 61
  • Model on the board while describing the stroke:
    • "Start at the top. Go down."
    • "Curve round at the bottom, like a cup."
    • "Go up to the top."
    • "Then go straight down again."
  • Learners draw a big "u" in the air, then on the table with a finger
  • Learners colour in the big "u" with crayons

Main Activity -- Pencil Tracing (12 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check each learner's grip
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time:
    • Row 1: look at the solid black "u", then trace the dotted letters, starting at the red dot
    • Row 2: trace the dotted letters, saying "/u/" for each one
    • Rows 3 and 4: with the teacher's help, try a "u" starting at each red dot
  • Praise effort: "Your u is a lovely cup shape!"

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Start the Little Artists art activity: colour the umbrella on page 61
  • Give every panel of the umbrella its own colour. Learners say "umbrella, /u/" while colouring

Differentiation

  • Support: Trace hand-over-hand; let the learner trace a large "u" drawn in thick marker first
  • Extension: Learners who finish can count the panels of their umbrella

Day 3: Little Activities and Review (30 minutes)

Materials

  • A real umbrella, a tablet with the /u/ sound, playdough, crayons, Activity Book

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the page 60 pictures; learners say each word

Main Activity -- Activity Boxes (20 minutes)

Choose three or four of the activities from page 60 to fit the time:

  • Little Explorers: Open a real umbrella indoors and let every learner stand under it. Ask what it keeps off their heads (the rain).
  • Little Innovators: Play the /u/ sound on the tablet. Each learner points to one picture that begins with it.
  • Little Builders: Roll a playdough dome, hook a curved handle underneath, and every learner has an umbrella.
  • Little Artists: Colour the umbrella on the next page. Give every panel its own colour and fill in the dots.
  • Little Thinkers: Count how many learners have an uncle. Say whether that is more than half the group.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
  • Circle time: each learner says one "u" word from the page while standing "under" the umbrella
  • Everyone says "/u/" one last time

Differentiation

  • Support: For Little Thinkers, stand the learners with an uncle on one side of the room so the group can see the two sides
  • Extension: Ask learners to say "up" and "under" while moving the umbrella, listening for the /u/ sound

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Let the learners run a finger along "u", then colour it in
  • Hand out pencils and work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
  • Open the umbrella carefully indoors, away from faces
