Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letter "r" when the teacher says its name
2. Say the sound /r/
3. Name the pictures rabbit, rose, rhino and rocket
4. Repeat the sentence "A happy bunny is smiling at a beautiful red rose." with the teacher
5. Trace the letter "r" starting at the red dot

All assessment is done by watching and listening. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter and Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Hold up the "r" card among two other letter cards. Ask: "Where is r?" Then ask: "What sound does r make?"
• Criteria:
  • Points to "r" correctly
  • Says /r/ clearly
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

2. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Show the pictures from page 50 one at a time: rabbit, rose, rhino, rocket
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

3. Listen and Repeat (During Day 1)

• Task: Learner repeats the speech-bubble sentence in short parts after the teacher
• Criteria:
  • Repeats "A happy bunny" and "a beautiful red rose"
  • Can answer "What colour is the rose?" (red)
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

4. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Learner traces the dotted "r" letters on page 51
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the red dot
  • Goes down first, then back up and over
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Yes, confidently / Yes, with help / Not yet

End-of-Lesson Check (Oral and Practical)

Do this one learner at a time in a quiet corner. Keep it short and friendly.

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "r". (1 mark)
2. Say the sound "r" makes. (1 mark)

Part B: Words (4 marks)

• Show each picture and ask "What is this?"
  • rabbit (1 mark)
  • rose (1 mark)
  • rhino (1 mark)
  • rocket (1 mark)

Part C: Listening (2 marks)

1. "Is the bunny happy or sad?" (1 mark)
2. "What colour is the rose?" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Trace two "r" letters from the red dot:
  • Starts at the dot (1 mark)
  • Correct direction of the stroke (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

  • Play "sound hunt" with the teacher using the four picture cards each day
  • Trace a large "r" in sand, on a tray, or with a wet finger on the board
  • Practise the /r/ sound by pretending to be a rocket engine
  • Repeat the tracing rows on page 51 with hand-over-hand help
