Assessment Plan -- Lesson 15

Letter o

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Point to the letter "o" when asked
  2. Say the letter name "o" and its sound /o/
  3. Say the "o" words from the page when shown a picture: oranges, octopus, owl, onion, ostrich
  4. Repeat the speech-bubble sentence with help
  5. Trace the letter "o" starting at the red dot

All assessment is done by watching and listening. Playgroup learners are not given written tests.

Formative Assessment

1. Sound Check (During Day 1)

  • Task: Show the "o" card and ask, "What does this letter say?"
  • Look for:
    • Says the letter name "o"
    • Makes the short /o/ sound with a round mouth
  • Rating: Confident / Getting there / Needs more practice

2. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

  • Task: Point to each picture on page 42 and ask, "What is this?"
    1. oranges
    2. octopus
    3. owl
    4. onion
    5. ostrich
  • Look for: Names at least 3 out of 5 pictures, with or without help
  • Rating: Confident / Getting there / Needs more practice

3. Point to It (During Day 1)

  • Task: Say a word ("owl", "onion", "ostrich") and the learner points to the picture
  • Look for: Points to the correct picture for at least 2 out of 3 words
  • Rating: Confident / Getting there / Needs more practice

4. Sentence Echo (During Day 1)

  • Task: Learner repeats "The happy octopus playing with all the yummy oranges in the water!" after the teacher, in short parts
  • Look for: Says the key words "octopus" and "oranges"
  • Rating: Says whole sentence / Says key words / Needs more practice

5. Tracing Check (During Day 2)

  • Task: Learner traces the "o" rows on page 43
  • Look for:
    • Starts at the red dot at the top
    • Curves round to the left and closes the circle
    • Holds the pencil with a gentle grip
  • Rating: Confident / Getting there / Needs more practice

End-of-Lesson Check (One-to-One, 3-4 minutes per child)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 ticks)

  1. Show the letter "o" among two other letters. "Can you find o?" (1 tick)
  2. "What sound does o make?" (1 tick)

Part B: Words (3 ticks)

  • Show three pictures from the page (for example: octopus, onion, ostrich). The child names each one. (1 tick each)

Part C: Sound Listening (2 ticks)

  • Say two words: "octopus" and "nuts". "Which one starts with /o/?" (1 tick)
  • Say two words: "onion" and "nurse". "Which one starts with /o/?" (1 tick)

Part D: Tracing (3 ticks)

  • Starts at the red dot (1 tick)
  • Curves round the correct way (1 tick)
  • Closes the circle (1 tick)

Total: 10 ticks

Remediation Plan

  • Learners with fewer than 5 ticks should:
    • Play "Point to it" with the page 42 pictures for two minutes each day
    • Make a round "o" mouth in a mirror and say /o/
    • Walk round a chalk circle on the floor, then trace a big "o" with a finger
    • Hold a real orange and say "orange, o"
  • Share with parents: ask them to show an orange or an onion at home and say the word together
