Letter z

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "z", the last letter of the alphabet. Learners look at a big picture of Zainab visiting a zoo in the mountains, where she meets a friendly zebra. They say the words zoo and zebra and meet three more words that begin with "z": zucchini, zeppelin and zigzag. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the letter "z" and colour the zebra picture. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

• Textbook page 72
• A bag or coat with a zip
• Picture cards (or the book pictures) of zoo, zebra, zucchini, zeppelin, zigzag
• A real zucchini if available
• A tablet or screen with a short clip of zigzag lines moving across the screen

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

• Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
• Draw a big "z" in the air with your finger: across, slide down, across
• Say the sound /z/ slowly, like a buzzing bee: "zzzzz"
• Learners put their fingers on their throats to feel the buzz as they say /z/
• Fly a pretend bee around the circle, buzzing /z/

Little Explorers (5 minutes)

• Find a zip on a bag or a coat
• Let every learner pull it up and down and hear it
• Say together: "zip, /z/ /z/ zip"
• Point out that a zip makes a "zzz" sound too

Look and Say (10 minutes)

• Open page 72 and look at the big picture
• Point to the zoo sign and say "zoo". Learners repeat
• Point to the zebra and say "zebra". Learners repeat
• Read the speech bubble aloud: "Zainab visits the zoo and sees the zebra." Learners echo it in two parts:
  • "Zainab visits the zoo"
  • "and sees the zebra"
• Point to each picture card and say the word; learners repeat twice:
  • zucchini -- "a long green vegetable"
  • zeppelin -- "a big balloon ship that flies in the sky"
  • zigzag -- "a line that goes up and down, up and down"
• Ask simple pointing questions:
  • "Where is Zainab?"
  • "Where is the zebra?"
  • "Can you find the zigzag lines?"

Little Innovators (5 minutes)

• Show zigzag lines moving across the screen
• The learners tap the table whenever the line changes direction
• Then learners draw a zigzag in the air, saying "zig, zag, zig, zag"

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

• Hold up the picture cards one by one and let learners call out the word
• Ask: "What sound does z make?" Learners buzz /z/
• Sing a goodbye song

Differentiation

• Support: Let a learner point to the picture while you say the word, then say it together
• Extension: Ask a confident learner to name all five "z" words from the page with picture help

Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

• Textbook pages 72-73
• Pencils and black crayons
• Playdough

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

• Show the picture cards again: zoo, zebra, zucchini, zeppelin, zigzag. Learners say each word
• Say the speech-bubble sentence together: "Zainab visits the zoo and sees the zebra."
• Play "Buzzing Bees": learners buzz and fly around when they hear a "z" word, and freeze for other words

Little Thinkers (5 minutes)

• Look at page 72 and count the animals behind the zoo fence in the picture together
• Say which one of them is tallest
• Help learners say "This one is tallest" while pointing

Letter Feel and Colour (5 minutes)

• Open page 73 and point to the big pink "z"
• Let the learners run a finger along "z": a line across the top, a slide down to the bottom left, and a line across the bottom
• Chant "across, slide down, across"
• Then let learners colour the big "z" in

Trace and Write (10 minutes)

• Hand out pencils and check each learner's grip
• Point to the solid black "z" at the start of the first row. Draw it in the air together
• Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time:
  • Row 1: trace the dotted "z" letters, starting at the red dot
  • Row 2: trace the dotted "z" letters, starting at the red dot
  • Rows 3 and 4: only red dots are shown. Help learners start at each dot and try a "z" on their own
• Chant "across, slide down, across" for each letter
• Guide hands gently where needed; praise every try

Little Artists and Little Builders (5 minutes)

• When the writing is done, start the Little Artists art activity: colour the zebra on page 73
• Use black for the stripes, and leave the white ones bare
• Little Builders: roll a long playdough rope and join the two ends together into one big round zero
• Learners hold up their zero and say "zero"

Wrap-Up

• Learners hold up their zebras and say "z, /z/, zebra"
• Celebrate: "We know all the letters from a to z!"
• Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

• Support: Hold the learner's hand lightly and trace one "z" together before they try alone
• Extension: Let a confident learner make a "z" from three playdough ropes
