Importance of Plants

Subject: English | Class: 3 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 10, the final unit of your Leeds English textbook. Today we are going to learn about one of the most important topics: the Importance of Plants.

Plants play an important role in our life. They not only make us feel good, but they are also useful in so many ways. Let us find out why plants are so important.

First, plants give us food. We get fruits like apples, mangoes, and bananas from plants. We get vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, and spinach. We also get pulses and grains like wheat and rice from plants. Without plants, we would have nothing to eat!

Second, plants give us many useful materials. We get wood from trees to build houses and furniture. We get paper from trees to make our books and notebooks. We also get cotton to make clothes, rubber to make tyres, oils for cooking, spices for flavour, and seeds for planting new plants.

Third, some plants are used to make medicines. Plants like tulsi, neem, ginger, and garlic have special properties that help us fight diseases and stay healthy.

Fourth, and this is very important, plants give us oxygen. Oxygen is the gas that all living things on Earth need to breathe. Plants give out oxygen all day long. This helps to increase the amount of oxygen in the air and purify it. That is why plants act as air purifiers. They clean the air we breathe!

Fifth, plants help our environment. Plants cool the environment by absorbing the heat of the sun through their leaves. They also bind the soil with their roots, which stops the soil from being washed away by rain.

Now, because plants are so important, we must take care of them. Here are some ways we can help:

First, let us not cut trees. We should use only those branches and leaves that have fallen down.

Second, we should promote afforestation. Afforestation means planting new plants. We should plant saplings in our schools and neighbourhood areas and take care of them.

Third, we need to save our forests. We should put a ban on deforestation, which means the cutting down of forests. We should also take steps to protect forests against fires.

In a nutshell, plants are a gift of Allah on Earth. We must take care of plants so that their number does not decrease. Our existence on Earth is only due to plants.

Now let us learn some vocabulary.

"Important" means valuable. Plants are important for all living things.

"Necessities" means basic needs. We depend on plants for various necessities.

"Purifier" means something which helps in removing impurities. Plants act as air purifiers.

Next, let us learn about anagrams and homophones.

An anagram is a word formed by rearranging the letters of another word. For example, the word "heart" can be rearranged to make the word "earth." The word "act" becomes "cat." The word "eat" becomes "tea."

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and different meanings. For example, "whale" and "wail" sound the same but mean different things. A whale is a large sea animal, but to wail means to cry loudly. Other examples: "cell" and "sell," "brake" and "break."

Finally, let us learn about tenses. Tense tells us when an action happens.

Simple Present Tense is used for actions that happen regularly or for facts that are always true. For example: "The sun rises in the east." "Plants give us oxygen."

Present Continuous Tense is used for actions that are happening right now. For example: "The birds are singing in the trees." "I am studying English."

Simple Past Tense is used for actions that are already completed. For example: "They went to Karachi last year." "We planted trees in our garden."

We also learned about the elements of a story. Every good story has five elements: Characters are the people or animals in the story. Setting is where the story takes place. The Beginning is where the characters and setting are introduced. The Middle is where the problem is introduced. And the Ending is where the problem is solved.

Let us recap everything we learned in this final unit. Plants are extremely important because they give us food, materials, medicine, and oxygen. They help our environment by cooling it and binding the soil. We must protect plants through afforestation and by stopping deforestation. We learned about anagrams and homophones. We learned three tenses: simple present, present continuous, and simple past. And we learned the five elements of a story.

Remember, plants are a gift of Allah. Take care of them, plant new trees, and help make our Earth green and beautiful!

Thank you for watching. This is the end of your Leeds English Class 3 textbook. We hope you enjoyed learning with us. Keep reading, keep learning, and keep growing!
