My School
Subject: English | Class: 1 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)
Overview
This unit features a passage about a child describing their school. Students learn about adjectives (describing words), fruits and vegetables vocabulary, directions (left/right), pronouns, indefinite articles (a/an), and practise a polite school dialogue.
Learning Objectives
- Use pre-reading strategies to predict the story by looking at pictures
- Interact with the text to locate specific factual information
- Respond to text through pantomime and simple role play
- Know about different types of people in school
- Comprehend and respond to simple wh-questions
- Use describing words showing quality, size, and colour (adjectives)
- Recognise categories of naming words (fruits and vegetables)
- Recognise directions (left/right)
- Recognise and use substitution words (I, we, you, he, she, it, they)
- Identify "a" or "an" as indefinite articles
- Recognise that plural nouns do not take articles "a" or "an"
- Demonstrate oral interactions to exchange social courtesies
Day 1: Reading (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 33-34, pictures of a school, chart paper
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Ask: "What is the name of your school?"
- Show pictures of a school building, classroom, garden, library
- Discuss: "What do you like about your school?"
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the passage aloud:
- "I study in Junior Model School. The school where I study is the best school of our city. It is situated on G.T Road in Lahore."
- "There is a small garden in my school where lots of colourful flowers bloom in spring. I also play with my friends in the garden during recess time."
- "There are sixteen teachers and three hundred students in our school. There are ten classrooms. Our classrooms are whitewashed. All the classrooms are also airy. Our school has also a library. There are books almost on all subjects in the library."
- "All the teachers of our school are able and hardworking. Their method of teaching is very nice. That's why our school always shows 100 per cent result every year."
- "Our principal is a noble man. He respects all the teachers. All the students like him very much."
- "I always go to school on time. I like to go to school daily. I like my school very much."
- Ask while-reading question: "There are ___ classrooms in our school."
- Ask post-reading questions: "Do you go to school daily?" and "Do you follow classroom rules?"
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Students share what they like about their own school
- Discuss the importance of going to school daily and on time

- Support: Ask simple yes/no questions about the passage
- Extension: Students write 2 sentences about their own school
Day 2: Comprehension, Adjectives & Fruits/Vegetables (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 35-36, adjective flashcards, fruit and vegetable pictures
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Quick review: "How many classrooms are in the school?" (Ten)
Main Activity -- Comprehension (10 minutes)
- Answer comprehension questions:
- In which school do you study?
- How many classrooms are there in your school?
- How many teachers are there in your school?
- Is there any library in your school?
- Do you like going to school daily?
Main Activity -- Adjectives (15 minutes)
- Introduce adjectives: "An adjective is a describing word. It tells you more about a noun."
- Examples: a beautiful bird, a big elephant, a green parrot
- Exercise: Encircle the adjective in each sentence:
- Aden is a good boy.
- The hen is a small bird.
- Russia is the largest country of the world.
- This is a white pigeon.
- There are many beautiful valleys in Azad Kashmir.
Main Activity -- Fruits and Vegetables (10 minutes)
- Fruits: apple, mango, apricot, grapes
- Vegetables: spinach, carrot, cauliflower, turnip
- Show pictures and name each one
- Exercise: Sort pictures into "Fruits" and "Vegetables" categories
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Quick adjective quiz: teacher says a noun, students add an adjective
Day 3: Directions, Pronouns, Articles & Oral Communication (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 36-38, direction signs, article practice cards
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Review adjectives with a quick game
Main Activity -- Directions (5 minutes)
- Teach left and right using direction signs
- Exercise: Circle the direction each animal is facing (left or right)
Main Activity -- Pronouns (10 minutes)
- "A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun."
- Examples: Ayesha is a girl. She studies in class one. (She = pronoun)
- Pronouns: I, we, you, he, she, it, they
- Exercise: Choose the correct pronoun (He/She/It/They) for each picture
Main Activity -- Indefinite Articles (10 minutes)
- "A" is used before a singular noun beginning with a consonant sound: a boat, a cup, a pencil
- "An" is used before a word beginning with a vowel sound: an apple, an inkpot, an umbrella
- Exercise: Write "a" or "an" before: ___ apple, ___ cat, ___ igloo, ___ giraffe
Oral Communication (5 minutes)
- Practise the dialogue:
- Rabia: "Assalaamu Alaikum, Shazia!"
- Shazia: "Wa Alaikum Assalaam!"
- Rabia: "How is your health now?"
- Shazia: "I am fine now, thank you."
- Rabia: "How was your final result?"
- Shazia: "I got first position."
- Rabia: "Congratulation on your success."
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Recap: adjectives, directions, pronouns, articles
