Quick Recap — Spacewalks (10 minutes)

Key Facts:

  1. What is a spacewalk? When an astronaut gets out of a vehicle while in space. Also called EVA (Extravehicular Activity).
  2. First spacewalk: Alexei Leonov from Russia, March 18, 1965, lasted 10 minutes.
  3. Modern spacewalks: Happen outside the International Space Station, last 5–8 hours.
  4. Why? Science experiments, test equipment, repair satellites and spacecraft in space.
  5. How do they go? Wear spacesuits (with oxygen, water). Leave through an airlock.
  6. How do they stay safe? Use safety tethers (like ropes) attached to the spacecraft. Tools are also tethered.
  7. How do they train? Practise in swimming pools (7 hours of pool training for every 1 hour in space). Use virtual reality with helmets and special gloves.

  • "The first spacewalk lasted one hour." (False — 10 minutes)

Key elements of a self-introduction:

  • Name, nationality, age, grade
  • Favourite subject, hobbies
  • Family (brothers, sisters, pets)
  • What you want to be when you grow up
