Go Green
Subject: English | Class: 4 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)
Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 10 of your Leeds English textbook, the final unit. Today we are going to learn about a very important topic: Go Green. This lesson is about global warming, its effects, and what we can do to protect our planet.
The lesson begins with a father named Asim and his son Abdullah watching the news about a volcano on TV. Abdullah was shocked and had many questions. He asked his father, "What is global warming?" His father explained that global warming is the warming up of the earth.
Abdullah asked, "Who is heating up the earth?" His father said that water vapour from air conditioners, carbon dioxide, and methane from all the vehicles and factories are heating up the earth. These are called greenhouse gases.
Then Abdullah asked, "How are we affected by global warming?" His father explained that these gases destroy the ozone cover around the earth. Without the ozone layer, heat and harmful rays from the sun increase the earth's temperature. This causes the sea levels to rise, summer streams to reduce, some species to become extinct, and diseases that were gone before to come back. Global warming is truly the largest threat to humanity.
Abdullah wanted to know what they could do to help. His father was very happy with this question and explained many things they could do. The most important thing is to minimise the use of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are coal, gas, and petrol. We should use eco-friendly vehicles like bicycles, tricycles, and cycle rickshaws. Two wheelers should be used instead of cars. We should use public transport whenever possible. Short distances should be covered by walking, which also keeps our mind and body fit.
His father also said that we need more forests. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and replace it with oxygen. We should plant more and more trees. We should also reduce the use of plastic. Instead of plastic bags, we should carry cloth and jute bags for shopping. And the plastic we already have can be recycled and used again.
Abdullah then showed his father a table from the newspaper about how long different materials take to decay. Cotton rags take 1 to 5 months. Paper takes 2 to 5 months. But plastic bags take 10 to 20 years! Artificial fibre clothes take 30 to 40 years. And leather shoes take 25 to 50 years. That is why we must reduce plastic — it stays in the environment for a very long time.
Abdullah was so inspired that he decided to gather all his friends and form an Eco club. They would plan for a plastic-free zone and plant saplings along their streets. Each house would take care of two saplings. His father smiled proudly.
Now let us learn some important vocabulary. "Attention" means the act of listening. "Global" means relating to the whole world, worldwide. And "extinct" means dead or lost.
In this unit, we learned about long and short vowel sounds. When a vowel sounds like its name, it is a long vowel. For example, the "a" in grapes is long. When a vowel does not sound like its name, it is a short vowel. For example, the "a" in apple is short. Some examples of short vowels are apple, net, igloo, dog, and sun. Some examples of long vowels are grapes, eagle, island, potato, and music.
We also learned about anagrams. An anagram is a word formed by rearranging the letters of another word. For example, "bread" can be rearranged to make "beard." And "begin" can be rearranged to make "being."
We learned about homophones too. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. For example, "mail" means letters, but "male" means a boy or man. "Son" means a boy child, but "sun" means the star in the sky. "Ate" means you ate food, but "eight" is the number 8.
We also learned the past continuous tense. This tense is used for actions that were happening at a particular time in the past. For positive sentences, we use the formula: Subject plus was or were plus verb-ing plus object. For example, "She was reading a book." For negative sentences, we add "not" after was or were. For example, "She was not reading a book." For questions, we put was or were at the beginning. For example, "Was she reading a book?" Remember to use "was" with I, he, she, and it, and "were" with we, you, and they.
Let us do a quick recap. Global warming is the warming up of the earth caused by greenhouse gases from vehicles, factories, and air conditioners. It destroys the ozone layer, raises temperatures and sea levels, and causes species to become extinct. We can help by using eco-friendly vehicles, planting trees, reducing plastic, using cloth bags, and recycling. We also learned about long and short vowel sounds, anagrams, homophones, and the past continuous tense.
Remember, global warming is a man-made problem, and we can all be part of the solution. Go green, plant trees, reduce plastic, and protect our beautiful planet Earth! Thank you for watching, and well done on completing all ten units of your Leeds English textbook!
