Who Saved the Tree

Subject: English | Class: 4 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 7 of your Leeds English textbook. Today we are going to read an exciting story called "Who Saved the Tree." This story teaches us about the importance of trees and how we can protect them.

Ali and Abdullah were two boys who lived in a village near a forest. During holidays, they would go to the forest and play under a big banyan tree with their friends. They played seven stones around it. Sometimes they enjoyed sitting on its broad branches and swinging to and fro, holding its hanging roots. The tree was also the home of many birds and insects. Ali and Abdullah enjoyed watching the birds build their nests. The tree had lots of tiny little fruits on all its branches, and the boys were very fond of the tree.

One Sunday morning, Ali and Abdullah saw two strangers at Suleman's tea-stall. The strangers had two iron axes with them. One of them asked Suleman, "How far is the forest from here? Can you tell us the way to the forest?"

Ali and Abdullah looked at each other. "What will these men do with the axes? We must follow them and find out," Ali said. They followed the strangers into the forest and were shocked to see them chopping trees.

"Stop that!" Ali shouted. "Why are you cutting these trees?" But one of the men shouted back, "Get out from here!" Ali and Abdullah wanted to do something quickly before the men could cut down more trees. "Let's go and ask for help," said Abdullah. They were terribly upset.

The children ran through the streets shouting and calling, "Save our trees! Save our trees!" All the people rushed to the forest — men, women, and children. And what did they see there? Hundreds of birds were flying all around their favourite banyan tree. Several monkeys, deer, squirrels, parrots, and owls were barking, screeching, screaming, and chirping. It looked like a battlefield. It was so sudden.

The villagers had never seen such a thing before. The strangers had never dreamt of it either. They were scared. They left their axes behind and ran towards the town for their lives. They will never come back. The villagers appreciated Ali and Abdullah and were greatly thankful to one another.

So, who saved the banyan tree? It was both the brave boys, who raised the alarm, and the birds and animals, who scared the strangers away. They all worked together to protect their beloved tree.

Now let us learn some important vocabulary from this lesson. "Shocked" means surprised and upset. "Sudden" means happening quickly and unexpectedly. And "appreciate" means to be grateful.

In this unit, we learned about the two pronunciations of the word "the." When "the" comes before a word that starts with a vowel sound, we say "thee." For example, "thee elephants," "thee ants," "thee orange." When "the" comes before a word that starts with a consonant sound, we say "thuh." For example, "thuh great army," "thuh world," "thuh valley."

We also learned about the three cases of pronouns. The first case is subjective. These pronouns are the subject of the sentence — I, you, he, she, it, we, they. For example, "He has a bicycle." The second case is objective. These pronouns receive the action — me, you, him, her, it, us, them. For example, "Give the chocolate to me." The third case is possessive. These pronouns show ownership — mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs. For example, "This book is mine."

We also learned how to read a pie chart. A pie chart shows proportions of a whole, like how many students like different subjects. The bigger the slice, the larger the percentage.

Finally, we learned about the elements of a story. Every story has five elements. Characters are the people or animals in the story. The setting is where and when the story takes place. The plot is what happens — the beginning, middle, and end. The conflict is the problem in the story. And the resolution is how the problem is solved.

Let us do a quick recap. Ali and Abdullah saved a banyan tree from strangers who wanted to cut it down. They raised the alarm and the whole village, along with birds and animals, scared the strangers away. We learned the two sounds of "the," the three cases of pronouns, how to read a pie chart, and the five elements of a story.

Remember, trees are a valuable heritage for future generations. We can show our love for the Earth by planting and protecting trees. Thank you for watching!
