Subject: English | Class: 4 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)
Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 2 of your Leeds English textbook. Today we are going to learn about the life of Hazrat Khadija, Razi Allahu Ta'ala Anha, one of the most important figures in Islamic history.
Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) was born in 555 AD in the holy city of Makkah. Her father's name was Khuwaylid-ibn-Asad, and her mother's name was Fatimah-bint-Za'idah. She belonged to the clan of Banu Quraish.
Hazrat Khadija's (R.A.) mother passed away around 575 AD. Her father, who was a successful businessman and merchant, passed away around 585 AD. After her father's death, she inherited his wealth and took over the family business.
She was an excellent businesswoman. She successfully managed her father's trade interests and preserved the family's fortune. When the Quraysh's trade caravans gathered to travel to Syria in summer or Yemen in winter, Hazrat Khadija's (R.A.) caravan alone equalled all the other caravans of the Quraysh traders put together. That shows how successful she was.
Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) had many honourable titles. She was called Ameerat-Quraish, which means Princess of Quraysh. She was called Al-Tahira, which means The Pure One. She was also called Khadija Al-Kubra, meaning Khadija the Great. And she is commonly known as Ummul Momineen, the Mother of the Believers.
She was known for her great generosity. She used to feed and clothe the poor. She would assist her relatives financially. She even provided for the marriages of those in her family who could not afford it.
Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) was also an honourable wealthy woman who put her wealth at the disposal of others who traded for her and received wages for their services. When Hazrat Muhammad's (PBUH) fame for honesty, virtue, and trustworthiness spread throughout Arabia, it reached Hazrat Khadija (R.A.), and she began seeking his cooperation. At the age of 23, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) began his journey towards Damascus, which is in Syria, to trade on her behalf. She ordered her servant, Mysara, to accompany him and serve him.
This journey brought many blessings and great profits. Mysara reported the huge profits to Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) and also spoke about Hazrat Muhammad's (PBUH) excellent character and generosity. Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) was greatly impressed by his good qualities and sent a proposal of marriage through her friend. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) accepted after consulting his uncle, Hazrat Abu Talib. At the time of marriage, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was 25 years old and Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) was 40 years old.
They spent 25 wonderful years together. She was not only a loving wife but also his best and most helpful companion. Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) was also the first woman to embrace Islam. She passed away at the age of 65 in 619 AD.
Now let us review some important vocabulary from this lesson. "Arduous" means difficult. "Assist" means to help. And "generosity" means the spirit of giving freely.
In this unit, we also learned about pronouns. Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. Subjective pronouns are used as the subject of a sentence, such as I, he, she, we, and they. Objective pronouns receive the action, such as me, him, her, us, and them.
We also learned when to use "a" or "an" before words with silent consonant letters. When the first consonant is not pronounced, listen to the sound of the next letter. If it sounds like a vowel, use "an." For example, "an hour" and "an honest man." If it sounds like a consonant, use "a." For example, "a knight" and "a knife."
Let us do a quick recap. Hazrat Khadija (R.A.) was born in 555 AD in Makkah. She was a successful businesswoman, known for her generosity and kindness. She married Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) when he was 25 and she was 40. She was the first woman to embrace Islam. Her titles include Ameerat-Quraish, Al-Tahira, Khadija Al-Kubra, and Ummul Momineen. She passed away in 619 AD at the age of 65.
Thank you for watching, and may we all learn from the wonderful example of Hazrat Khadija (R.A.)!
