Be Responsible

Subject: English | Class: 4 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 1 of your Leeds English textbook. Today we are going to learn about being responsible.

So, what does it mean to be responsible? Being responsible means feeling an obligation to do something seriously. It means taking ownership of your actions and your duties.

Responsible children are well-disciplined. They are self-motivated and self-directed. That means they do their work on their own — they don't need to be nagged about homework or reminded to go to school. They take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour, both at home and at school.

Responsible children also make good choices. They know what to do and when to do it. For example, they avoid morning "crazy time" by preparing the night before. They take just 5 to 10 minutes before bedtime to get ready for the next day. They get their homework papers signed, pack their backpack, make their lunch, and lay out their clothes. Then they can get up early enough to eat a good breakfast without any rush.

Now, sometimes we face problems. A responsible person is a problem solver. There are five useful steps you can follow when you face a problem. Step one: Decide what the problem is and summarize it in a few words. Step two: Generate several possible solutions — ask yourself, what can be done to solve this problem? Step three: Evaluate the solutions — list the positive and negative effects of each option. Step four: Decide on a solution — look at the pros and cons and choose the best one. Step five: Develop a plan to make the solution work. Remember, the real secret is to use the problem-solving process to make the best decision you can, and then make it work.

Now let us learn some important vocabulary from this lesson. "Obligation" means a duty or commitment — something you are bound to do. "Crises" means a time of intense difficulty or danger. "Nagged" means persistently annoying or finding fault with someone. "Comprehend" means to understand something. And "pros and cons" means the advantages and disadvantages of something.

This unit also teaches us about digraphs and trigraphs. A digraph is two letters that make one sound, like "ch" in chain, "sh" in fish, and "wh" in white. A trigraph is three letters that make one sound, like "tch" in watch, "igh" in fight, and "dge" in fridge.

We also learned about silent letters. These are letters that exist in the spelling of a word but are not pronounced. For example, the "b" in lamb is silent. The "k" in knife and knee is silent. The "b" in comb is silent. Can you think of more words with silent letters?

Finally, we learned about multi-syllable words. A syllable is a part of a word with one vowel sound. "Pencil" has two syllables: pen-cil. "Helicopter" has four syllables: he-li-cop-ter. You can clap your hands to count the syllables in any word.

Let us do a quick recap. Being responsible means taking your duties seriously. Responsible children are self-motivated, well-disciplined, and prepare for the next day the night before. When you face a problem, use the five steps: decide the problem, generate solutions, evaluate them, pick the best one, and make a plan. We also learned about digraphs, trigraphs, silent letters, and syllables.

Remember, being responsible starts with small steps — pack your bag tonight, finish your homework on time, and help your family at home. Thank you for watching, and keep being responsible!
