Daily Lesson Plan — Unit 1

Be Responsible

Subject: English | Class: 4 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Lesson Duration

3 periods (40 minutes each)

Period 1: Reading and Comprehension

Objectives:

  • Use pre-reading strategy to predict content from the title
  • Read and understand the dialogue about responsibility
  • Locate specific factual information to answer questions
  • Guess meaning of difficult words from context

Materials:

  • Textbook (pages 4–8)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Chart paper for vocabulary

Warm-Up (5 minutes):

  • Write "Be Responsible" on the board.
  • Ask students: "What theme do you predict from this title?"
  • Accept and discuss predictions. Connect to students' prior knowledge about responsibility.

Pre-Reading (5 minutes):

  • Introduce the dialogue format: Teacher, Akif, Saad, and Waqas are characters.
  • Ask: "What does it mean to be responsible?"
  • Let students share their ideas before reading.

While-Reading (20 minutes):

  • Read the dialogue aloud with students taking character roles (Teacher, Akif, Saad, Waqas).
  • Pause at the while-reading prompt: "What should you do to avoid morning 'crazy time'?"
  • Discuss the five problem-solving steps:
    1. Decide what the problem is
    2. Generate several possible solutions
    3. Evaluate the solutions
    4. Decide on a solution
    5. Develop a plan to make the solution work

Post-Reading (10 minutes):

  • Ask students to predict the meaning of "pros and cons" from context.
  • Discuss how responsible children behave (self-motivated, self-directed, prepare the night before).
  • Ask: "Do you prepare your bag and clothes the night before school?"

Differentiation:

  • Struggling learners: Pair with a stronger reader during role-play. Provide a simplified list of the five problem-solving steps.
  • Advanced learners: Ask them to think of a real problem they faced and apply the five steps to it.

Period 2: Vocabulary, Grammar, and Oral Communication

Objectives:

  • Learn meanings of key vocabulary words
  • Classify words containing digraphs and trigraphs
  • Identify naming words, action words, and describing words
  • Pronounce words with silent letters correctly

Materials:

  • Textbook (pages 6–8)
  • Vocabulary flashcards
  • Whiteboard for classification tables

Vocabulary Activity (10 minutes):

  • Teach the five vocabulary words with meanings:
    • obligation — a duty or commitment
    • crises — a time of intense difficulty or danger
    • nagged — persistently annoying or finding fault with someone
    • comprehend — to understand something

  • Practise saying: lamb, castle, knife, knee, comb, match.
  • Students identify silent letters in: hour, crumb, knuckle, climb, knob, wrinkle, assign, sign, knit.

Differentiation:

  • Struggling learners: Provide a pre-filled digraph/trigraph chart with one example already done. Use pictures for naming/action/describing words.

Period 3: Creative Writing and Assessment

Objectives:

  • Write multi-syllable words with correct spelling
  • Count syllables in words
