Seasons
Subject: English | Class: 3 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)
Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 8 of your Leeds English textbook. Today we are going to learn about the four beautiful seasons in Pakistan.
Pakistan is a land of four different seasons. They are winter, spring, summer, and autumn. When seasons change, weather also changes, and we can see the change in our surroundings.
Let us start with winter. Winter is the coldest season of the year. It snows in the mountain areas. During winter, we wear our favourite warm clothes like sweaters and jackets to stay warm. We also wear gloves, scarves, and long shoes. We can stay inside and read books. We can use heaters to keep us warm. Some houses have fireplaces where the family members sit around and talk about their day in the evenings.
Next is summer. Summer is the hottest season of the year. The sun shines bright and we sweat greatly. May, June, and July are the summer months. Summer nights are also sweltering, which means very hot. In summer, days get longer and nights get shorter. We wear light clothes and open shoes to stay cool.
Then comes spring. Spring is called the King of All Seasons! It is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold. It is a time of joy and delight. Nature looks cheerful. Birds fly from tree to tree singing sweetly. Different kinds of flowers bloom in spring.
Finally, there is autumn. Late in autumn, days get shorter and nights get longer. It goes dark earlier in the evening. The air gets colder. Leaves fall from the trees. Plants turn brown. Autumn is the season when nature prepares for winter.
Now let us learn some vocabulary.
"Fireplace" means a hearth for burning wood. In winter, families sit around the fireplace to keep warm.
"Sweltering" means very hot. Summer nights can be sweltering.
"Delight" means happiness. Spring is a time of joy and delight.
Next, let us learn about articles. In English, there are three articles: A, AN, and THE.
We use "a" before a word that begins with a consonant sound. For example: a cat, a lion, a book.
We use "an" before a word that begins with a vowel sound. For example: an apple, an axe, an elephant.
Remember, plural nouns do not take "a" or "an." We do not say "a cats" or "an apples."
We use "the" in special cases. We use "the" before the names of newspapers, like The Jang. We use "the" before the names of rivers, like The Ravi. And we use "the" before the names of holy books, like The Quran.
Now let us learn about action verbs. Words that describe actions are called action verbs. Examples are: eat, drink, run, play, wear, shine, sing, bloom.
The verbs be, do, and have can also be used as main verbs in sentences.
"Be" can be is, am, are, was, or were. For example: "Ayesha is a good girl." "I am happy to see you."
"Do" is used for actions. For example: "We should do our homework daily." "Sadia did well in the exams."
"Have" shows possession. For example: "I have a beautiful peacock." "She has a bicycle."
Let us recap what we learned today. Pakistan has four seasons: winter is the coldest, summer is the hottest, spring is the most beautiful and is called the King of All Seasons, and autumn is when leaves fall and days get shorter. We learned vocabulary words: fireplace, sweltering, and delight. We learned about articles a, an, and the. We learned about action verbs and the use of be, do, and have as main verbs.
Nature has given us wonderful seasons, each one different and special in its own way!
Thank you for watching. See you in the next lesson!
