Daily Lesson Plan — Unit 7

Technology

Subject: English | Class: 3 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Overview

This unit introduces students to important inventions that form the basis of modern civilization. Three inventions are covered: the wheel (invented over 5,000 years ago, made of stone or wood), the printing press (invented by Gutenberg in 1450), and the light bulb (invented by Edison in 1876). Language skills include vocabulary with syllable division, consonant clusters (initial: st, fr, gr, sn; final: st, nd, sk, nk), adjectives identification, irregular plural nouns, jumbled words spelling, the five magic words (Thank you, Please, Sorry, Welcome, Excuse me), and creative writing about inventions.

  • Use appropriate expressions to offer and respond to greetings
  • Recite a poem with actions
  • Use critical thinking to respond to text by relating to own experiences
  • Use alphabetical order to arrange words
  • Recognize general naming words as common nouns and particular naming words as proper nouns
  • Recognize and use words opposite in meaning
  • Write syllabic division of a word for learning word meanings
  • Write sentences using correct capitalization, punctuation, and spellings

Day 1: Pre-Reading and Reading — Three Great Inventions (40 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook pages 39-40
  • Pictures of a wheel, printing press, and light bulb
  • Board and markers

Warm-Up (10 minutes)

  1. Pre-reading: "What is an invention?" "Which are some useful inventions?"
  2. Show pictures of different inventions and ask students to name them.
  3. Discuss: "What would life be like without wheels? Without books? Without light?"

Reading Activity (25 minutes)

  1. Read the passage aloud, covering three inventions:

    The Wheel:

    • Most important invention of all times
    • Invented more than 5,000 years ago
    • First wheel was probably made of stone or wood
    • Later, tyres were invented — made of rubber and filled with air
    • Same type of tyres used today
    • Uses: carry heavy weight, push or pull carts, travel quickly and easily
    • While-reading: "Think about all those things in which wheels are used."

    Printing Press:

    • Most important invention of modern times
    • In ancient times, people wrote all books by hand — book reading was not common
    • Credit goes to Gutenberg who invented the first printing machine in 1450
    • Machine printed pages — people did not have to write books by hand
    • Uses: prints pages quickly, causes less labour

    Bulb:

    • In older days, people used candles or lamps at night
    • Man-made fire was the only source of light
    • In 1876, Edison invented the light bulb
    • Today we use different versions: energy savers, LEDs, etc.
  2. Students read silently, then take turns reading aloud.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  1. Teaching tip discussion: "Which one of the above inventions is the most important and why?"
  2. Students share their opinions.

Differentiation

  • Support: Create a simple timeline: Wheel (5000+ years ago) → Printing Press (1450) → Bulb (1876).
  • Extension: Students think of one modern invention and explain its importance.

Day 2: Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Consonant Clusters (40 minutes)

    • When was printing press invented? (1450)
    • Which invention is the oldest? (The wheel)
    • Write any two benefits of wheels. (Carry heavy weight, travel quickly)
    • What type of light has replaced bulbs nowadays? (Energy savers, LEDs)
  2. Students write answers in notebooks.

Vocabulary with Syllable Division (10 minutes)
