Nickey & Ducky

Subject: English | Class: 3 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 6 of your Leeds English textbook. Today we are going to read a very exciting story about two friends named Nicky and Ducky. Nicky is a chick and Ducky is a duck. Let us find out what happens to them!

Once upon a time, there were two friends named Nicky the chick and Ducky the duck. They roamed together everywhere.

One day, they went up on a hill and saw what looked like a worm. The worm was wagging its tail from right to left.

Ducky said, "Nicky, I have got good food!" Nicky replied, "Of course, but I am vegetarian. Now, hurry up and get your food."

So Ducky went near the worm and picked it up with its beak. But suddenly, Ducky screamed! And they both rolled down the hill.

SPLASH! They all fell into the pond!

Now here is the surprise. It was not a worm at all! It was actually a small rat who was searching for food in a hole. Only its tail was sticking out of the hole, wagging here and there. When Ducky pulled the tail, the rat came out and they all tumbled down the hill into the pond.

The rat fell down too because its tail was in Ducky's beak. Now all three of them were in the water!

Ducky was used to swimming, so Ducky was fine. But poor Nicky could not swim! And the little rat was shivering with cold.

What did they do? They cooperated! Nicky grabbed the back wings of Ducky and tried to swim. The rat climbed up on Ducky's back and hid in its feathers to stay warm.

Then they all started to swim towards the bank of the pond. Ducky felt very happy because it had saved the life of the little rat — the same rat it was going to eat!

At last, all three of them reached the bank safely. They had come out of the pond with the cooperation of each other. All three were very happy.

What a wonderful story! The moral is that cooperation helps everyone. When we work together and help each other, we can overcome any difficulty.

Now let us learn about the three sounds of -ed. When we add -ed to a verb, it can sound three different ways.

First, when -ed follows the letters T or D, it is pronounced as /id/. For example: decided, wanted, landed.

Second, when -ed follows letters like B, G, L, M, N, V, or Z, it is pronounced as /d/. For example: saved, cleaned, advised.

Third, when -ed follows letters like K, S, CH, SH, F, or P, it is pronounced as /t/. For example: laughed, finished, helped.

Next, let us learn about possessive words. Possessive words show who owns something. The possessive words are: my, your, his, her, its, our, and their.

For example: "The child has worn his new clothes." The word "his" shows the clothes belong to the child. "Your cat is sitting on the mat." "Your" shows the cat belongs to you. "The goat has finished its food." "Its" shows the food belongs to the goat.

Now let us learn about joining words. Joining words connect words, phrases, or sentences together.

We use "and" to add things together. For example: "Allama Iqbal was a kind and honest man."

We use "or" to show a choice between two things. For example: "Would you like vermicelli or baryani?"

We use "but" to show a contrast or difference. For example: "Sana likes the meal but not the dessert."

We use "because" to give a reason. For example: "Abdul Rehman came late because it was raining outside."

Finally, let us learn about inflectional endings. These are letters we add to the end of a word. When we add S, we get plurals like apples, bags, cats. When we add ES, we get plurals like boxes, dishes, foxes, peaches.

Let us recap what we learned today. We read the story of Nicky, Ducky, and the rat, and learned that cooperation is the key to solving problems. We learned the three sounds of -ed: /d/, /t/, and /id/. We learned seven possessive words: my, your, his, her, its, our, and their. We learned about inflectional endings -s and -es. And we learned four joining words: and, or, but, and because.

Remember, always cooperate with your friends and family. Together, we can do anything!

Thank you for watching. See you in the next lesson!
