World of Insect

Subject: English | Class: 3 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 5 of your Leeds English textbook. Today we are going to explore the World of Insects, and we will learn some amazing facts about one of the most common insects around us: the ant!

First, let us understand what an insect is. Insects are small creatures with more legs and a hard shell. Most insects have wings and antennae. Insects come in many types, shapes, and sizes. Some insects are dangerous and some are not.

Today we are going to learn about ants. Ants are one of the most common insects living around us.

Let us start with the body of an ant. An ant has six legs and two antennae. Ants use their antennae to smell, taste, and feel things. They also use their antennae to talk to one another. Yes, ants communicate with each other!

Now let us learn about the home of ants. Ants live as families in small holes underground. They like dry and clean places. They like to build more rooms in their houses for their kids. In scientific language, the home of animals and insects is called a habitat.

What do ants eat? Ants like to eat small leaves, sweet fruits, and other things. They use their antennae to smell the food. Ants are very strong for their size. They can carry heavy food! When ants go to get food, they leave a trail behind them. This trail helps them find their way back home easily.

Now here is the most interesting part: the habits of ants. Ants are the most hardworking insects. They work hard in the summer season to collect food and make their homes. In winter, they live underground in their cosy homes, away from the cold weather.

Ants are very disciplined. They always move in a queue, which helps them finish their work on time and quickly. They also divide work in teams so that everyone is busy and useful. We can learn a lot from ants about teamwork and hard work!

Now let us learn a fun poem about insects. It is called "Can you move with me?" Listen carefully:

Can you wiggle like a worm? Can you squiggle? Can you squirm? Can you flutter? Can you fly like a gentle butterfly? Can you crawl upon the ground, like a beetle that is round? Can you move with me?

Can you flip? Can you flop? Can you give a little hop? Can you slither like a snake? Can you give a little shake? Can you dance like bee? Who is buzzing round a tree? Can you move with me?

Try doing the actions as you say the poem! Wiggle, flutter, crawl, hop, slither, dance!

Next, let us learn about contractions. A contraction is a short form of two words. We use an apostrophe to show where letters are left out.

"I have" becomes "I've." "You have" becomes "You've." "They have" becomes "They've."

For "has," we say: "He has" becomes "He's." "She has" becomes "She's." "It has" becomes "It's."

For the negative, we say: "I have not" becomes "I haven't." "He has not" becomes "He hasn't." "She has not" becomes "She hasn't." "They have not" becomes "They haven't."

For example, "I have called you many times" becomes "I've called you many times." And "He has not finished his work" becomes "He hasn't finished his work."

We also learned about strong and weak forms of have and has. When someone asks you, "Have you ever seen a dinosaur?" you can give a strong answer: "Yes, I have." Or a weak answer: "No, I haven't."

When someone asks, "Has she done her homework?" the strong answer is "Yes, she has." The weak answer is "No, she hasn't."

Let us recap what we learned today. We learned that insects are small creatures with more legs and a hard shell. We learned about ants: they have six legs and two antennae, they live underground, they eat leaves and fruits, and they are very hardworking and disciplined. We learned a fun poem about insect movements. We learned about contractions with have and has. And we practised strong and weak forms.

Remember, just like ants, we should work hard, be disciplined, and cooperate with each other!

Thank you for watching. See you in the next lesson!
